Research Scientist, Neurology / Neurological Care, Biomedical Science
A postdoctoral training position is available in the laboratory of Dr. Marek Napieralain the Department of Neurology at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center ().
The Napierala laboratory has several exciting projects related to developing therapeutic strategies for neurodegenerative disorders that involve gene regulation, repeat instability, mitochondria fitness and function, neuron development and activity and biomarker discovery. A variety of model systems and experimental approaches are used for our projects, including induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC) models, mouse models, genome editing, next-generation sequencing, genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, molecular biology, biochemistry.
Current projects funded by the National Institute of Neurological Diseases and Stroke (NINDS) include:
1) determining how somatic repeat expansions influence neurodegenerative phenotypes;
2) defining the molecular mechanisms underlying somatic instability of repetitive DNA sequences; and
3) determining how interruptions within repeat tracts influence cellular and tissue-level phenotypes.
Candidates must hold a recent Ph.D. and/or M.D. degree. Experience in mammalian cell culture or working with mouse models of neurological disorders, along with proficiency in basic molecular biology techniques leading to publication in peer-reviewed journals is desired. The selected candidate will join a dynamic, collaborative, and fast-paced research environment, working closely with Dr. Napierala and other members of the laboratory while also contributing independently to ongoing and new research projects.
Responsibilities include developing and implementing novel research methods, conducting in vitro and in vivo experiments, planning and managing research projects, interpreting data, preparing presentations and peer-reviewed publications, and contributing to grant applications.
Dr. Napierala is committed to supporting the candidate's scientific and professional development by fostering grant submissions, providing opportunities to attend and present at scientific conferences, and encouraging exploration of new research directions and collaborations. We seek ambitious and dedicated scientists to drive ongoing projects in the lab and to use their creativity to discover new paths forward in our field. Opportunities exist in our laboratory to contribute to collaborative projects held with industry partners.
