Recreation and Activities Coordinator – Juvenile Probation (Dallas County)

Provides supervision and services for youth; organizes and coordinates recreational activities for individuals and groups in pre/post adjudication facilities within Dallas County Juvenile Probation Department.
Responsibilities- Provides supervision and services for youths to promote rehabilitation. Maintains detailed, accurate program records, participant files, daily attendance, and progress reports. Provides weekly and monthly activity reports to management.
- Monitors and reviews recreational needs and interests of youth in each facility to design and create program activities. Oversees maintenance and use of recreational equipment, including cleaning, resupplying, training in appropriate use, and enforcing safety policies.
- Interviews clients, conducts needs assessments, and develops services. Works with participants one‑on‑one, in small groups, and during events to provide guidance and mentorship. Trains and guides other facility staff to assist with or implement recreational program activities.
- Serves as back‑up to staff and assumes all duties as necessary, including administering medications, transporting youths to appointments, processing intake assessments or discharges, disciplining youths, and performing handling and restraint techniques as outlined in the Texas Juvenile Justice Department (TJJD) requirement.
- Researches grant opportunities, creates, and assists in the drafting of grant proposals and reports for additional funding for recreational activities, including proposals for new trends in the field.
- Participates in team meetings to review progress and other pertinent information essential to meeting the needs of the client.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Education and experience equivalent to a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Recreation, Health and Human Performance, Applied Exercise and Sport Science, or related area. One (1) year of work‑related experience supervising or providing recreational activities with youth in the community (sports/leisure activities for adolescents).
Special Requirements / Knowledge, Skills & AbilitiesAbility to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, and establish and maintain working relationships with employees, departments, and the general public. Must obtain First Aid/CPR certification within 90 days of hire. Must be certified as required by applicable standards for the facility/department within six months of employment. Must maintain 40 hours of training yearly. Must be physically able to perform scheduled recreational activities, CPR, first aid, and behavior management techniques, including personal restraint techniques outlined in approved training curriculum.
Must have a valid Texas Driver’s License and a good driving record. Will be required to provide a 10‑year driving history and maintain compliance with Article II, Subdivision II of Chapter 90 of the Dallas County Code. Must pass an extensive background investigation and mandatory drug testing prior to employment. Position is subject to random, unannounced drug and/or alcohol testing during employment.
This position requires managing schedules, vendors, and equipment, and working with participants of all abilities.

Must be at least 21 years of age (for applicable positions) and must pass all portions (physical/written) of the Juvenile Academy to continue employment or all standards related to PREA and Ethics for specific positions.
Physical/Environmental RequirementsWorks inside a secured and unsecured facility with potential exposure to hepatitis, tuberculosis, lice, and other diseases. Ability to restrain and/or chase youths. May be required to utilize a vehicle to transport youths. Work requires moderate exertion and the occasional lifting of 26‑50 pounds.
