Job Summary

Performs advanced substance abuse counseling work. Work involves planning and coordinating substance abuse counseling programs and activities. Works under minimal supervision with extensive latitude for initiative and independent judgment.

Essential Functions
  • Assists in substance use treatment programs; coordinates with other departments, divisions, agencies, and community organizations for delivery of treatment services to inmates with substance use histories.
  • Provides advanced specialized substance use and substance use disorder assessments in compliance with Substance Use Treatment Program standards, guidelines, policies, and procedures.
  • Maintains inmate records and other records regarding services provided, includes statistical feedback on evaluations, and compiles data to submit reports and documentation.
  • Assists in instructing others in program methods, procedures, and functions.
  • Performs a variety of marginal duties not listed, to be determined and assigned as needed.
Minimum Qualifications Education, Experience, and Training
  • Graduation from an accredited senior high school or equivalent, or GED.
  • Three years full‑time, wage‑earning experience (in substance use treatment, education, human services, psychology, social work, sociology, behavioral science, or criminal justice). Fifteen semester hours of college coursework in related fields may substitute for each six months of experience.
  • Therapeutic community environment experience preferred.
  • Screening and assessment experience preferred.
  • Current valid licensure as a Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselor (LCDC), Certified Criminal Justice Professional (CCJP), Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), or Licensed Psychological Associate (LPA). Must maintain valid license or certification for continued employment.
  • Knowledge and Skills
    • Knowledge of substance use disorders, co‑dependency, and related disorders.
    • Knowledge of counseling assessment techniques and understanding of substance use recovery.
    • Knowledge of applicable state and federal laws, rules, regulations, and statutes.
    • Knowledge of agency and departmental structure, policies, procedures, rules, and regulations preferred.
    • Skill to observe, assess, evaluate, and analyze provided services and prepare related reports.
    • Skill in motivational interviewing techniques.
    • Skill to communicate ideas and instructions clearly and concisely.
    • Skill to coordinate with other staff, departments, officials, agencies, organizations, and the public.
    • Skill to interpret and apply rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.
    • Skill in problem‑solving techniques.
    • Skill to review technical data and prepare technical reports.
    • Skill to prepare and maintain accurate records, files, and reports.
    • Skill to interpret and translate Spanish to English and English to Spanish preferred.
    Additional Requirements
    • Ability to walk, stand, sit, kneel, push, stoop, reach above shoulder, grasp, pull, bend repeatedly, climb stairs, identify colors, hear with aid, see, write, count, read, speak, analyze, alphabetize, lift and carry under 15 lbs., perceive depth, operate a motor vehicle, and operate motor equipment.
    • Work conditions include working inside, around machines, radiant/electrical energy, closely with others, alone, protracted or irregular hours, traveling by car, van, bus, airplane.
    • Equipment used: computer, calculator, copier, fax machine, telephone, dolly, automobile.
