Job Summary
Under the direction of the Practice Manager, the Urology Technician II (UT‑II) assists physicians, advanced practice providers, and nurses with the management and treatment of patients during office visits and related tasks. The UT‑II provides a wide variety of clinical and technical support functions, assists with outpatient procedures, ensures efficient patient flow, maintains a clean and safe patient care environment, and promotes patient satisfaction through professional, respectful interactions.
Additionally, the UT‑II collaborates with the Practice Manager to coordinate UT efforts and mentors the UT‑I.
- Ensures efficient patient flow through the clinic:
- Greets patients and families in the waiting room and escorts them to the exam room.
- Identifies patients using two identifiers (name & DOB).
- Alerts patients to possible delays in visit timing.
- Obtains and documents accurate vital signs, height, weight, pain level, and allergies.
- Verifies that pre‑visit paperwork is completed.
- Performs appropriate ancillary services (urinalysis) unless directed otherwise.
- Obtains, verifies, processes, and documents results for urine specimens using the Clinitek device.
- Under physician direction, sends urine specimens for culture & sensitivity or cytology.
- Anticipates physician needs, setting up special equipment, supplies, and paperwork.
- Alerts the provider when the patient is ready to be seen and communicates pertinent clinical information.
- Assists patients with the check‑out process.
- Prepares exam rooms for the next patient and expedites processes to maintain schedules.
- Provides patient care during visits as appropriate and adheres to MGH hand hygiene and standard precaution guidelines.
- Documents data per practice protocols and supports treatments and procedures per department policies.
- Uses the Ambulatory Patient Tracking System to enhance patient flow via timely communication of patient movements.
- Maintains neat, clean, and safe exam rooms and treatment areas:
- Ensures patient care areas are clean, organized, and ready for patients.
- Stocks, equips, and secures exam and treatment rooms.
- Cleans equipment after use per office protocol, ensuring equipment is in working order with current biomedical inspection stickers.
- Places supplies away in a timely manner.
- Participates in daily operational activities necessary for a safe patient care environment:
- Checks unit emergency equipment for lock integrity and biomedical safety checks.
- Monitors refrigerator temperatures and maintains records in the Safety Manual.
- Performs quality checks for POCT, Cidex OPA, and the Steris system.
- Assumes responsibility for neat, organized, and well‑stocked exam rooms.
- Understands and monitors appropriate cleaning of all equipment.
- Maintains patient confidentiality and MGB‑JCAHO standards on the unit.
- Communicates care‑patient issues with peers, nursing staff, Practice Manager, and Operations Manager.
- Supports and functions as a member of the care team, promoting patient/customer satisfaction with professional, respectful, and friendly interactions.
- Adheres to Human Resource policies for attendance and dress code, and to the MGH customer service philosophy.
- Interacts professionally and collaboratively with all care team members.
- Accepts delegated responsibilities positively and offers help when able.
- Ensures adequate coverage before leaving for breaks, lunch, or meetings.
- Engages in constructive problem solving and participates in staff meetings and MA in‑services.
- Completes all annual required training.
- Principally support the procedural areas of the Urology ambulatory practice.
- Manage up to 50 procedural patients daily and develop an inventory of procedure‑specific equipment and supplies.
- Monitor procedure schedules 48 and 24 hours prior to procedure dates, resolving mis‑scheduled exams with the procedure team.
- Prepare procedure rooms with necessary supplies and equipment for each unique procedure.
- Maintain systems of care and preventative maintenance of all equipment.
