Position Overview

The Illinois Department of Corrections is seeking an organized and detail-oriented person to serve as an Office Assistant in the Mailroom at Danville Correctional Center. The ideal candidate will have strong attention to detail, especially when preparing reports and ensuring contraband does not enter the facility. The candidate should possess the ability to communicate effectively with multiple entities to ensure the safety and security of the institution.

Essential Functions
  • Opens and inspects all incoming and outgoing individual in custody mail.
  • Performs data input of checks received for deposit to individual in custody accounts.
  • Processes all incoming and outgoing institutional mail.
  • Maintains permanent records for legal mail, money received to be deposited in individual in custody trust fund accounts, and contraband discovered.
  • Keyboards a variety of difficult material including records, reports, correspondence, and other documents requiring reading or understanding where terminology includes both commonly used and specialized works which can be readily checked in available references.
  • Prepares reports which affect the operation and/or security of the institution.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Requires knowledge, skill, and mental development equivalent to completion of high school and one (1) year of related office experience.
  • Requires ability to keyboard accurately at 35 wpm.
Conditions of Employment
  • This position is considered medium work as defined by the U.S. Department of Labor (20 CFR 404.1567(c)). Medium work involves lifting no more than 50 pounds at a time with frequent lifting or carrying of objects weighing up to 25 pounds.
