Job Title: Medical Technologist
Location: Danville VA Medical Center, 1900 East Main Street, Danville, IL
Contract Duration: January 1, 2025 – January 1, 2030
Compensation: $33.97 per hour
Shift Schedule:
- 1st Shift: Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
- 2nd Shift: Monday through Friday, 3:30 p.m. – Midnight
- Overtime on an as-needed basis
Laboratory staff must be present during normal business hours as established by the Chief of Laboratory. Hours may be revised as needed for patient care.
Position Summary:
We are seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Medical Technologist to perform a wide range of laboratory procedures, both automated and manual, in accordance with established protocols. The ideal candidate will have expertise in various areas such as chemistry, urinalysis, hematology, serology, bacteriology, and immunohematology. The Medical Technologist will be responsible for specimen analysis, quality control, instrument calibration, and ensuring the accuracy of lab results.
Additionally, the role involves maintaining laboratory records and performing phlebotomy as required.
Key Responsibilities:
- Perform a full range of automated and non-automated laboratory procedures in the areas of chemistry, urinalysis, hematology, serology, bacteriology, and immunohematology according to established protocols.
- Evaluate the suitability of the specimen for analysis, requesting new specimens if determined to be unusable. Prepare specimens for analysis, ensuring that the physiological states of the specimen properties are maintained.
- Select, perform, evaluate, and monitor the performance of test procedures using manual and/or instrumental techniques in accordance with established protocols. Recognize and react to indicators of malfunction; locate and implement corrections.
- Conduct quality control procedures on equipment, reagents, and products and maintain proper records for quality control reports.
- Calibrate, standardize, adjust, and maintain instruments on which trained. Verify correct instrument operation using established procedures and quality control checks and monitoring. Identify the cause of common problems and make simple repairs.
- Evaluate the validity of data in relation to the test system and accepted assay procedures; correlate quantitative data with patient data (i.e., history, medications) to verify results.
- Perform additional tests to clarify or confirm abnormal patient results. Recognize abnormal results that require immediate attention by the physician and report them directly.
- Responsible for the generation of laboratory results from the work area into the laboratory computer system.
- Edit and verify results recorded into the computer system.
- Stock and maintain specialized supplies used in the work area.
- Accession and receive samples into VA laboratory information system package for in-house testing or send outs to reference laboratories.
- Perform phlebotomy to obtain patient specimens for laboratory testing including blood cultures and compatibility samples.
Skills and Experience:
- Minimum of one year experience within the past 5 years required.
- Ability to perform a variety of testing procedures with precision and attention to detail.
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently.
Educational Requirements:
- Bachelor’s Degree
- Graduate from a medical technology program accredited by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Science (NAACLS).
Certification Requirements:
- Current certification/registration as determined by the American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or American Medical Technologist (AMT).
