Role Overview

Expanded Ltd, part of the Laing O'Rourke Group, provides a full early‑construction capability across major projects, offering end‑to‑end solutions or bespoke services backed by central technical design and engineering resources. With growing demand, the business seeks an experienced Managing Estimator to lead major bids. The role is office‑based but requires occasional travel to project sites. Candidates may be based locally at any LOR hub or major project such as the Southeast, Midlands, Manchester or Glasgow.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead the estimating team across the bid process for major tenders or 2‑3 smaller bids, ensuring timely and thorough preparation.
  • Secure profitable work by meeting LOR Group requirements and delivering competitive bids.
  • Operate efficiently using Digital Engineering (DE) tools and estimating software, promoting consistent practices and incorporating lessons from past projects.
  • Engage all disciplines and functions—design, commercial, engineering, DE, procurement, research & development, planning and health, safety & environmental—to win work.
  • Provide procurement oversight, applying various mechanisms for project procurement.
  • Co‑achieve coaching, mentoring and development of apprentices, cadets and graduates within the function.
Skills, Knowledge & Attributes
  • First‑principle estimating experience in labour, plant and materials productivity for structural concrete works.
  • Experience with precast concrete frame solutions (hollow core, lattice planks, twin walls, PC columns) and understanding of falsework, formwork and slip‑form systems.
  • Expertise in forecasting net prime cost, preliminary costing and cost planning.
  • Expertise in supply‑chain enquiry generation and package management.
  • Ability to influence and develop winning tender strategies.
  • Comprehensive estimating procedures from initial assessment through submission, post‑tender process, award and handover.
  • Expertise in bid administration and tendering process management.
