Position: Method Engineer / Design Coordinator Tunnels)

Overview

The role will be responsible for coordinating and managing design and construction activities across the two Dartford tunnels and QE2 Bridge. It will provide technical input to challenge and propose solutions for upcoming projects, including leading method engineering reviews of design and framework subcontractors’ proposals. The live operational tunnels and bridges present multi‑layered complexity that requires innovative solutions to improve safety by design.

The role supports the CPS engineering team with design coordination, review of framework contractors’ proposals and management of external design consultants in line with delivery priorities and programme. The individual will participate in design and method workshops for specific scopes and maintain a regular weekly site presence to act as the interface between site construction works and the design & engineering teams.

Onsite responsibilities include checking activity Control Plans, specification compliance, QA records, identifying and raising NCRs, and ensuring Technical Queries (TQs) are raised, actioned and responded to with suitable solutions to support the project need.

Responsibilities
  • Design coordinator across a range of secondary steelwork and M&E schemes.
  • Understand construction tolerances and awareness of specification and other contract documents.
  • Identify potential hazards onsite or in the planned construction methodology and proactively implement actions and controls.
  • Manage design delivery and review documentation from internal and external consultants.
  • Prepare, raise or check Temporary Works Briefs.
  • Review and prepare methods of work for complex installations.
  • Engage workforce to ensure design and engineering solutions are efficiently and safely executed onsite.
  • Produce weekly programmes, measure design progress against KPIs, and forecast suitable design resources to meet the programme of works.
  • Identify items of additional work and raise the necessary notifications.
Accountabilities
  • Monitor, review and check deliverables from external designers to ensure designs are complete and compliant before submission to National Highways through the review process.
  • Manage external framework design suppliers to deliver agreed outcomes, scope, on time and to budget.
  • Assist the wider Design Team in various Structures and M&E improvement schemes.
  • Support internal design resources within the Design Team to deliver agreed outcomes, scope, on time and to budget.
  • Undertake and manage optioneering and feasibility of design solutions and preparation of whole life costing.
  • Prepare and review contract documentation.
  • Work with the Connect Plus Services (CPS) Asset Team to agree achievable Asset Management Forward Plans.
  • Develop and agree briefs with the design team and design suppliers, covering scope, budget and programme, and obtain agreement from the Asset head.
  • Prepare and submit instructions to design suppliers.
  • Ensure all designs meet the quality standards required by the DBFO contract and CPS internal standards.
  • Work with the Project Manager to lead internal reviews during the design phase to ensure timely and appropriate sign‑off is achieved.
  • Act as the key engineering interface between site operations at Dartford and the Design & Engineering team.
  • Liaise with National Highways on technical issues and submissions.
  • Liaise internally with other teams within Connect Plus (CP) and CPS as required.
  • Liaise with all statutory bodies/authorities as required – such as Highway Authorities, Planning Authorities and statutory undertakers.
  • Ensure learning and best practice is captured from the project with the aim of sharing it across the business.
  • Deputise for line manager as required.
  • Live the Connect Plus Services values.
  • Ensure a relentless focus on Zero Harm, and Safety by Design.
  • Ensure the Principal Designer and delegated duties are met under CDM.
  • Support the delivery of the business’ sustainability activities.
  • Attend relevant community forums to represent the Engineering Design team.
Qualifications – Essential
  • Relevant vocational qualifications (MEng, MSc, BEng, BSc, HNC, HND).
