About the role

Location:

London and surrounding areas

At Balfour Beatty, we're delivering some of the UK's most critical power infrastructure projects, helping to connect communities, enable renewable energy and support the transition to a low-carbon future.

We're looking for a Project Engineer to join our Power Transmission & Distribution team, supporting the delivery of our London Power Tunnels Decommissioning Project.

This is not a traditional Project Engineer role and it certainly isn't a standard 9-to-5 position.

We're looking for someone who wants to be at the heart of operational delivery, working closely with site teams, customers and stakeholders across London to support planned and emergency works on critical power infrastructure. This is a role for someone who enjoys being out on site, solving problems, coordinating teams and taking ownership when it matters most.

While the demands of the role are significant, so is the opportunity.

You’ll join one of the UK's largest and busiest infrastructure contractors, working within a Power T&D business that delivers major transmission and distribution projects across the country. You’ll gain exposure to specialist HV cable repair and decommissioning works, develop your technical, operational and leadership skills, and build a career path that could lead into Project Management, Construction Management and senior operational leadership roles in the future.

This role would particularly suit someone in the early stages of their career. You may already be working as a Graduate Engineer, Assistant Project Engineer, Site Engineer or Engineer and be looking for a role that offers more exposure, responsibility and development than a traditional office-based position.

You’ll spend significant time on site, learn directly from experienced operational teams, and develop skills that will set you up for a successful long‑term career within one of the UK's leading infrastructure businesses.

What you’ll be doing

Working closely with the Project Manager and operational delivery teams, you’ll play a key role in coordinating and supporting HV cable repair and decommissioning activities across London.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Supporting the safe and successful delivery of fault response, repair and decommissioning works
  • Coordinating labour, plant, materials and subcontractors across multiple locations
  • Providing day-to-day leadership, guidance and support to operational teams on site
  • Working closely with the client and acting as a key point of contact throughout project delivery
  • Responding to emergency call-outs and supporting works outside normal working hours when required
  • Monitoring progress, maintaining project documentation and supporting reporting requirements
  • Ensuring all activities are delivered safely and in accordance with approved procedures and RAMS
  • Building strong working relationships with site teams, stakeholders and customers
  • Supporting planning and coordination activities to ensure works are delivered efficiently

Developing specialist knowledge of HV cable repair and power infrastructure works
  • Maintaining a strong site presence and working closely alongside operational teams to understand the challenges of delivery first‑hand
Who we’re looking for

We’re more interested in attitude, flexibility and willingness to learn than extensive industry experience.

The successful candidate will have:

  • An engineering qualification or relevant engineering background
  • Experience with in engineering, construction, utilities, infrastructure or a similar operational environment
  • Strong organisational and communication skills
  • Excellent relationship-building skills and confidence dealing with customers and stakeholders
  • A proactive, hands‑on approach to problem solving
  • The ability to coordinate teams and provide clear direction when required
  • A willingness to learn specialist HV cable repair and decommissioning activities
  • The ability to work effectively in a fast‑paced operational environment
  • A genuine desire to build a long‑term career within the infrastructure sector

Previous power industry experience would be advantageous, but it is by no means essential.
