General Accountant, Civil Construction

Harbour Construction is looking for a General Accountant to join our accounting team.

This is an opportunity for an accounting professional who enjoys variety, takes pride in accurate work, and wants exposure to a broad range of accounting responsibilities within an established and growing organization.

Reporting to the Controller, the General Accountant plays an important role in supporting the day-to-day accounting operations of the company. While Accounts Payable is a significant component of the role (60%), this is not a narrowly focused AP position. The successful candidate will also be involved in reconciliations, compliance reporting, fixed asset accounting, payroll support, and month‑end activities.

As Harbour Construction continues to invest in its people, processes, and technology, this role offers the opportunity to contribute to process improvements, gain exposure to multiple areas of accounting, and grow professionally within a well‑established organization.

What You’ll Do Accounting Operations
  • Process supplier invoices and payment runs.
  • Reconcile supplier statements and resolve discrepancies.
  • Complete bank reconciliations and credit card reconciliations.
  • Maintain accurate accounting records and supporting documentation.
  • Support month‑end and year‑end accounting activities.
General Accounting
  • Maintain fixed asset records and depreciation schedules.
  • Prepare journal entries and supporting schedules.
  • Assist with account reconciliations and balance sheet reviews.
  • Support financial reporting activities and general ledger accuracy.
Compliance & Reporting
  • Prepare and submit HST filings.
  • Prepare payroll source deduction remittances.
  • Support payroll processing and payroll‑related reporting.
  • Assist with audit requests and regulatory reporting requirements.
Continuous Improvement
  • Support the ongoing optimization of ERP and other financial systems.
  • Identify opportunities to improve accounting processes and efficiencies.
  • Contribute to the development of strong internal controls and accounting practices.
What We’re Looking For

Required Qualifications
  • Diploma or degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field.
  • Minimum two years of accounting experience.
  • Experience with accounts payable and account reconciliations.
  • Strong understanding of accounting principles and financial controls.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and accounting software.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
Preferred Assets
  • Experience in construction, civil construction, or project‑based industries.
  • Experience with ERP or accounting software.
  • Payroll experience.
  • Experience preparing HST filings and government remittances.
  • Progress toward a CPA designation or other accounting credential.
Why Join Harbour Construction?

Harbour Construction has been building infrastructure across Nova Scotia since 1946.

We’ve built our reputation by investing in our people, equipment, and operations for the long term. The accounting team plays an important role in supporting that success by ensuring accurate financial information, strong processes, and effective controls are in place across the organization.

This role offers the opportunity to build broad accounting experience rather than being limited to a single function. You’ll gain exposure to accounts payable, reconciliations, compliance reporting, fixed asset accounting, payroll support, and month‑end activities while working closely with experienced professionals in a collaborative environment.

Culture here is not something we talk about — it’s something you experience. It shows up in how our teams support one another, how people take ownership of their work, and how everyone contributes to the success of the business.

We’re building a company where people want to stay — with meaningful work, strong leadership, modern systems, and opportunities to build a long‑term career.

You’ll Fit In Here If You…
  • Take pride in producing accurate work.
  • Enjoy solving problems and finding efficiencies.
  • Are highly organized and detail‑oriented.
  • Work well with people across different departments.
  • Take ownership of your responsibilities.

Want to build a long‑term career with a stable and growing organization.
