Reporting to the Vice President of Finance, the Sr. Program Accountant is responsible for providing financial oversight, reporting, and analysis for assigned projects from setup through closeout. This role ensures project costs, budgets, commitments, and financial records are accurate, timely, and compliant with internal policies, accounting standards and contractual requirements.
The Sr. Program Accountant works closely with project managers, finance operations teams, and finance leadership to support sound financial decision-making, identify risks and variances, and help ensure projects are delivered within approved financial parameters.

Responsibilities- Set up, maintain, and close project accounts in the accounting system, ensuring project structures, budgets, and reporting requirements are accurately reflected.
- Monitor project budgets, expenditures, commitments, encumbrances and change orders.
- Prepare, review, and analyze monthly project financial reports, including cost-to-date, forecast-to-complete, budget variance, profitability, and cash flow information.
- Investigate project cost variances, billing discrepancies, and unbilled expenses; recommend corrective actions and document resolutions.
- Partner with project managers to develop budgets, forecasts, projections, and financial plans for active and upcoming projects.
- Maintain accurate project records, including contracts, change orders, approvals, billing documentation, compliance records, and audit support materials.
- Support internal and external audits by preparing schedules, reconciliations, explanations, and required documentation.
- Assist in improving project accounting processes, internal controls, reporting templates, and financial management practices.
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field preferred.
- CPA designation (required or strongly preferred).
- 7-10+ years of experience in accounting, finance, project accounting, construction accounting, or a related project-based financial environment.
- Experience in a mid-sized organization (approximately $100M–$500M revenue).
- Strong understanding of accounting principles, project cost tracking, reconciliations, budgeting, forecasting, and financial reporting.
- Experience with accounting or enterprise resource planning systems; project accounting software experience is an asset.
- Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Excel and working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications.
