Overview
The Mechanical Technologist, Environmental executes mechanical and environmental testing by preparing test setups, operating laboratory equipment, collecting accurate data, and maintaining test documentation. The role focuses on hands-on testing, equipment operation, and day-to-day project execution, ensuring tests are performed safely, accurately, and in compliance with ISO/IEC 17025 quality system requirements.
Accountabilities- Plan and conduct mechanical & environmental tests including vibration (sine, random and shock response), mechanical shock, thermal testing & humidity, corrosive environment, blowing sand & dust, ingress protection, and fatigue/tensile testing.
- Perform test setup, fixturing, and instrumentation installation as per test plans.
- Operate shakers, environmental chambers, shock machines and other test equipment under approved procedures.
- Monitor tests during execution, record test data, observations and environmental conditions and identify abnormal conditions or safety concerns.
- Perform functional tests on customer equipment as per supplied SOP.
- Install, verify and operate sensors such as accelerometers, thermocouples and strain gauges.
- Set up and monitor data acquisition systems.
- Perform maintenance of tools and equipment and undertake and record equipment calibrations as per the calibration schedule.
- Troubleshooting and repair of test equipment.
- Proper use of all the measuring equipment in house, including thermocouples, micrometers, calipers, extensometers, LVDT’s, strain gauges, pressure transducers and accelerometers.
- Develop and complete test logs, checklists and test reports.
- Perform other related duties and staff functions as required by the company.
- Diploma in Mechanical Engineering Technology or equivalent.
- 1–5+ years of experience in mechanical testing, environmental testing, or industrial laboratory environments.
- Experienced in CAD Design
- Ability to read and follow engineering drawings, test plans, and procedures.
- Working knowledge of mechanical assemblies, fasteners, and fixturing.
- Familiarity with AS9100 quality system preferred
- Strong attention to detail and documentation discipline.
- Safety-focused with good situational awareness.
- Organized and dependable with the ability to follow schedules and work independently.
- Comfortable working in hands-on, industrial environments.
- Regular lifting and positioning of test articles and fixturing.
- May require off-hours or extended testing support during long duration tests.
