- Manage all aspects of the Grocery Department including staff, sales, margin, and labor.
- In the absence of the Store Director, assist with managing and developing all aspects of the Total Store.
- Assist customers as needed and maintain a friendly, energetic demeanor.
- Adhere to procedural guidelines set by the Grocery Department.
- Prepare weekly sales and labor projections for the Grocery Department to maximize sales and profits; ensure department operations stay within the labor percent allowed.
- Monitor and control costs and expenses, including inventory control, accurate weighing procedures, shrink control, and ad display optimization.
- Hire, train, schedule, coach, and conduct performance reviews for Grocery Department staff; ensure staff are trained on policies and procedures.
- Oversee shift operations and approve department work schedules.
- Ensure weekly flyer ads are in stock and ready for sale; order and stock products for upcoming ads.
- Stock grocery department items, including facing, filling, organization, and price tagging accuracy.
- Maintain cleanliness of grocery aisles, storage areas, and work areas; keep floors clear of spills and hazards.
- Assist customers with purchases, information, and product selection; promote selling and cross-selling.
- Receive, inspect, and log products for shipment accuracy, temperature, and quality.
- Monitor rotation of products, manage expired stock, and discard outdated items.
- Balance the grocery general ledger and financial statements.
- Oversee pre-inventory preparation and ensure tags match products.
- Manage department inventory to prevent out-of-stocks and over-stocks.
- Maintain high product knowledge and product preparation standards.
- Maintain an organized, sanitary, and clean department appearance.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- High school diploma or equivalency degree.
- Minimum of 4 years professional experience.
- Preferred 3-5 years grocery retail experience in Grocery department processes and procedures.
- Previous experience in a natural foods industry is a plus.
- Must maintain the highest level of customer service at all times.
- Ability to adapt to the high-volume retail environment while working in a cross-functional team.
- Capacity to take initiative when problems arise.
- Flexibility to adapt in various situations.
- Advanced attention to detail with the ability to prioritize and meet deadlines.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills for cross-functional interaction with peers and senior management.
- Knowledge of MS Office including Outlook, Word, and Excel.
- Ability to multitask and maintain strong organizational skills.
- Ability to lead, support, and contribute to team goals.
- Ability to work varied hours/days as business dictates.
- Understand proper handling, preparation, seasonality, and shelf life of products.
- Familiarity with Health Department guidelines and regulations as they pertain to grocery retail.
