University of California Agriculture and Natural Resources (UC ANR) – Statewide Master Gardener Program.
The UC Master Gardener Program is an educational program under UC ANR designed to teach and extend information addressing gardening needs in California communities and align with UC ANR strategic initiatives. Since 1981, the program has extended UC research-based information on home horticulture and pest management to the public. UC trained Master Gardener volunteers offer services and outreach in 53 California counties through local UCCE offices.
Last year 6,216 active volunteers donated 395,239 hours; more than 7.7 million hours have been donated since inception.
This position enhances UC Master Gardener Program effectiveness through development and management of in-person and online trainings. Responsibilities include program/project management and oversight of statewide trainings (including online webinars), onboarding of new coordinators and advisors, regional/statewide advanced training, the triennial statewide conference, and development of training assets such as an expert speaker database, hands-on activities for eLearning, toolkits, and in-person instruction materials.
The role also involves ongoing communication and relationship building with subject matter experts.
They will work closely with the eLearning Specialist as lead for the Training Specialist. Together, they will ensure effective integration of eLearning into the program s training framework, create and execute annual training plans, and contribute to 5-year and strategic planning for programmatic training and related support requirements.
The position will inform the training budget for the statewide program and require financial stewardship to optimize resources while meeting objectives. Where possible, they will seek funding and partnership opportunities to expand training opportunities.
The role will nurture collaborative relationships within the UC Master Gardener statewide team and program community. They will be a subject matter expert in training methodologies and adult learning, engaging with experts in horticulture, community engagement, volunteer engagement, IPM, and related fields.
This is a career appointment that is 100% fixed. The home department is the Statewide Master Gardener Program. While normally based in Davis, CA, the position is eligible for hybrid flexible work arrangements for applicants in California. Note that such arrangements are subject to change by the University.

- 40% – Designs, develops, and conducts new trainings, training modalities (e.g., flipped classroom), toolkits, and courses in response to organizational training needs.
- 15% – Assume responsibility and oversight for the triennial UC Master Gardener volunteer-facing conference.
- 10% – Consult with subject matter experts to determine delivery methods and effective use of technology. Provide support and guidance on best practices to improve teaching and learning outcomes; apply professional training and development skills to address training issues and needs assessments.
- 10% – Interact and collaborate with internal personnel including volunteers, staff, and academics (subject matter experts).
- 10% – Receive general instructions on new training program assignments, projects, and initiatives.
- 10% – Collaborate with Impact and Communications Team on marketing for new training events and assets.
- 5% – Work with Impact and Evaluation Coordinator to evaluate training program effectiveness.
- Bachelor’s degree in Education or related field and/or equivalent experience or training.
- Strong analytical, verbal and written communication skills; ability to interact effectively with learners, instructors/subject matter experts, and stakeholders/community partners.
