Pay Range$75,000.00/yr – $85,000.00/yr
Role OverviewFrontier Energy is seeking a Building Science Engineer (3–5 years of experience) to support and manage research projects focused on building energy efficiency, energy modeling, and renewable energy. Working under the guidance of senior staff, the Engineer II will contribute to project execution, data analysis, and technical reporting across residential, commercial, and mixed‑use sectors.
Key Responsibilities- Conduct energy modeling, data analysis, and building performance evaluations.
- Support R&D, monitoring, evaluation, and Title 24 Codes and Standards projects.
- Prepare technical reports, assist with proposals, and support regulatory filings (CPUC, CEC, etc.).
- Present research findings to clients and stakeholders.
- Support and execute building energy efficiency projects with a focus on energy modeling and data analysis.
- Apply principles of thermodynamics, heat transfer, fluid mechanics, and energy conversion to evaluate building performance.
- Conduct data analysis, scripting, and visualization to interpret and present energy use findings.
- Collaborate on the development and refinement of California Title 24 Building Energy Standards and related building codes.
- Utilize Excel and other analytical tools to support decision‑making and policy development.
- B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering, Building Science, Energy Systems, or a related field.
- 3‑5 years relevant work experience in engineering or technical roles.
- Strong proficiency with Excel, including pivot tables, advanced formulas, and charting skills at a 4/5 level.
- Experience developing dashboards or interactive tools for communicating technical findings to non‑technical audiences.
- Basic understanding of current California activities related to grid resilience, distributed energy resources, electrification and carbon reduction strategies.
- Demonstrates strong critical thinking skills to navigate complex technical challenges and make informed decisions.
- Shows grit and perseverance in tackling difficult problems, maintaining focus and resilience through setbacks.
- 3‑5 years of work experience specifically within the energy sector.
- Professional certifications such as LEED AP, Certified Energy Manager (CEM), Building Performance Institute (BPI), or Engineer in Training (EIT) credentials.
- Proficiency with building energy modeling software including CBECC, Energy Plus, Open Studio, and the CEC‑recognized residential and non‑residential energy compliance tools.
- Proficiency in Python for advanced data analysis and visualization.
- Familiarity with the California regulatory environment, including California Title 24, Part 6, and utility or third‑party energy efficiency programs.
- Understanding of common energy efficiency measures in new and existing buildings, including the importance of systems interactions and non‑energy factors such as cost, comfort, durability, and indoor air quality.
- Strong technical writing skills with a portfolio of published reports, filings, or proposals.
- Experience managing multi‑stakeholder projects, including timelines, deliverables, stakeholder engagement, and client communications.
