Assistant/Associate Professor (tenure track) and/or Assistant/Associate Professor of Clinical Zoological Companion Animal Medicine and Surgery (clinical track)

Salary

The salary range for this position is $183,100-$236,400. Off‑scale salaries and other components of pay i.e., a salary that is higher than the published system‑wide salary at the designated rank and step are offered when necessary to meet competitive conditions, qualifications, and experience.

Qualifications

Veterinarian with advanced clinical training and experience in companion exotic animal medicine and surgery. Board certification by the American College of Zoological Medicine is required.

For the Professor series faculty only, an advanced degree (MS and/or PhD) or experience mentoring in research is required.

Documented research record or potential to develop a focused research program in the discipline of zoological companion animal medicine or surgery is required.

Must possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills and a demonstrated ability to work with others in a collegial team atmosphere.

Preferred Qualifications

Demonstrated aptitude/experience in teaching in both clinical and didactic settings is desired.

A valid license to practice veterinary medicine in California is required prior to beginning clinical duties (California Business and Professions Code Section 4846‑4857). Individuals not eligible for a full California license can obtain a University License (California Business and Professions Code Section 4848.1).

Responsibilities

Teaching:
Participation in lectures and laboratories in the DVM professional curriculum with a focus on companion exotic animal medicine and surgery; clinical teaching of veterinary students in the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital (VMTH), including the California Raptor Center and contracted zoological collections; participation in the ACZM clinical (resident) training programs of the VMTH; and for the Professor series faculty participation in the graduate academic programs (MS;

PhD; MPVM) of the campus if applicable.

Clinical and Professional Competence:
This position includes a clinical commitment to the Companion Exotic Animal Medicine and Surgery Service of the VMTH, depending on appointment level—50% commitment for Professors or 70% commitment for Professor of Clinical Zoological Companion Animal series. The individual will be responsible for directing, instructing and supervising veterinary students and house officers; providing health care and service to patients; and advising and consulting with referring veterinarians and clients.

Faculty are expected to establish a reputation for clinical excellence locally, regionally, and nationally.

Research and Creative Scholarship:
For the Professor series faculty, development of a creative, productive basic and/or clinically oriented research program in the discipline of Zoological Companion Animal Medicine and Surgery is a fundamental requirement, including publication of results in professional/scientific journals. Faculty in the Professor of Clinical series are expected to advance the clinical discipline through the creation and dissemination of new knowledge with documentation from peer‑reviewed publications.
