Position: Small Animal Dentistry & Oral Surgery Technician (ANML HEALTH TCHN 3 VMTH)

Position Overview

Small Animal Dentistry & Oral Surgery Technician (ANML HEALTH TCHN 3 VMTH). Under the direction of the Surgical Services Supervisor and the Dentistry and Oral Surgery Service Chief, provide specialized technical support to the Dentistry Service including restraining patients for oral exams, collecting samples for diagnostic laboratory testing, operating room setup, OR circulation, maintaining specialized equipment, and training students and residents in technical procedures.

Under the direction of the Anesthesia supervisor and Anesthesia Service Chief, create anesthesia protocols, induce, monitor, maintain and recover anesthetized animals. Work cooperatively with others to foster strong team commitments towards achieving anesthesia and surgery services objectives.

Responsibilities
  • Provide specialized technical support to the Dentistry Service including restraining patients for oral exams, collecting samples for diagnostic laboratory testing, operating room setup, OR circulation, maintaining specialized equipment, and training students and residents in technical procedures (e.g., blood collection and IV catheter placement).
  • Sedate and monitor patients for diagnostic imaging.
  • Under the direction of the Anesthesia supervisor and Anesthesia Service Chief, create anesthesia protocols, induce, monitor, maintain and recover anesthetized animals.
  • Collaborate with team members to support anesthesia and surgery service objectives.
  • 90% Technical Support; 10% Anesthesia (as defined under Key Responsibilities).
Qualifications
  • Current California Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) license.
  • No minimum education required.
  • Experience inducing and maintaining anesthesia.
  • Experience handling and restraining canine and feline patients.
  • Experience in aseptic technique and circulation in an operating room.
  • Experience calculating drug dosages and administering medications intravenously, subcutaneously, intramuscular or orally.
  • Experience communicating orally and in writing with a diverse group of people using appropriate medical terminology.
  • Ability to independently provide intense, moment-to-moment monitoring and reassessment of emergent, critically ill, or anesthetized patients.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with Dental Radiology and charting.
  • Experience prioritizing and organizing workload without direct supervision.
  • Experience using specialized surgical and diagnostic equipment (electro-cautery, pulse oximetry, Doppler, capnograph, ECG).
  • Experience performing standard CPR in emergency situations.

  • Technical Support: approximately 90%
  • Anesthesia: approximately 10%
