Job Summary

Under the direction of Staff Veterinarians, provide medical, dental, surgical, anesthesia and technical support in the care of non‑human primates. Duties include performing medical and dental procedures, initiating emergency treatments, inducing and maintaining anesthesia for surgical procedures, managing acute and critical intensive care procedures, venipuncture, catheterization, intubation and wound care, and providing technical support for endoscopy, surgery and laparoscopy. Record therapeutic orders and complete work orders.

Maintain stock levels of drugs, disposable solutions and hospital supplies, oversee equipment and instruments, and keep records of drug usage and hospitalization. Familiarity with regulations and guidelines is required to ensure appropriate care. The position requires working a 4‑day week/10 hour shifts with one weekend day. Employees may work with animals infected with HIV/SIV or other experimental agents.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Assistant Laboratory or Animal Technician (ALAT) or Laboratory Animal Technician (LAT).
  • Advanced experience in applying veterinary nursing procedures and knowledge of acute medical, emergency, and intensive care of laboratory animals, including venipuncture, catheterization, wound management, orogastric intubation and bandaging, and initiating emergency treatments.
  • Experience providing technical support for procedures including endoscopy, surgery and laparoscopy, and advanced radiology techniques. Experience with induction and maintenance of short‑term and long‑term anesthesia.
  • Experience with basic pharmacology, mammalian anatomy and physiology, and working with controlled drug policy, Good Laboratory Practices (GLP) and SOAP.
  • Knowledge and training in induction and maintenance of long‑term anesthesia in a veterinary or research environment.
  • Skills to perform complex medical procedures under the guidance of laboratory animal science veterinarians, including venipuncture, IV catheterization, gastric/incubation, intubation, wound healing, bandaging, and emergency treatments.
  • Interpersonal and communication skills to interact with investigators, visitors, veterinarians, residents, students and staff.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) license registered in the State of CA and/or LATG certification or American Association for Laboratory Animals.
  • Experience working in an animal research facility where non‑human primates may be infected with hazardous diseases.
  • Experience assessing physical and behavioral abnormalities of non‑human primates.
  • Experience initiating emergency medical treatment of non‑human primates.
  • Experience providing technical support for endoscopy, surgery, laparoscopy, dental procedures, radiology and oral surgery.
  • Skills to troubleshoot veterinary equipment such as radiology units, anesthetic machines, autoclaves, dental equipment, EKG, pulse oximeters, blood pressure monitors, nebulizers, fiber optic scopes.
  • Knowledge of USDA regulations, animal welfare and AALAS practices and protocols for primate models, behavior, social structure and enrichment. Computer and MS Office skills for data entry into internal colony systems.
