Position: PostDoc in Snow Isotope Modelling 80-100%, (f/m/d)

Post Doc in Snow Isotope Modelling 80‑100% (f/m/d)

The WSL Institute for Snow and Avalanche Research (SLF) is part of the Swiss Federal Institute for Forest, Snow and Landscape Research (WSL), part of the ETH Domain. WSL focuses on the sustainable use and protection of the environment and on the handling of natural hazards. The Research Unit “Snow and Atmosphere” investigates snow and its interactions with the hydro‑ and atmosphere across different scales, with the aim to improve our understanding of the role of snow in the climate system.

In a project funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNF), we are investigating the impact of the newly discovered process of airborne snow metamorphism (ASM) on the physical properties and isotopic composition of polar snow. The 2‑year Post Doc will develop and implement new model equations describing the evolution of snow microstructure and isotope signals during wind‑driven snow transport, parameterise these processes based on laboratory and Antarctic field data, and integrate them into the coupled atmosphere‑snow model CRYOWRF.

Responsibilities
  • Develop and implement new model equations describing the evolution of snow microstructure and isotope signals during wind‑driven snow transport.
  • Parameterise ASM processes based on laboratory and Antarctic field data and integrate them into the coupled atmosphere‑snow model CRYOWRF.
  • Perform advanced numerical simulations to quantify the impact of ASM on the isotopic composition, energy and mass balance of polar regions.
  • Collaborate with international project partners to publish results in scientific journals.
Qualifications
  • PhD in atmospheric sciences, physics, environmental engineering or a related field.
  • Expertise in numerical modelling, preferably with experience in snow or climate models, data analysis or process parameterization.
  • Good programming skills.
  • Excellent English skills;
    German skills are beneficial.
  • Strong motivation to work in an interdisciplinary team at the interface of experiments and modeling.

WSL is committed to diversity and inclusion as core values. We actively promote equality and foster an open, inclusive work environment.
