Senior Occupational Therapist – Secure Services, Langdon Hospital

Secure Services at Langdon Hospital provides medium and low secure care for men aged 18 years and over who are experiencing mental illness. This role supports recovery through occupational therapy and works within a multidisciplinary team that includes forensic, community and prison mental‑health services.

The Senior Occupational Therapist will develop, deliver and lead an evidence‑based occupational therapy service. You will supervise staff, manage a clinical caseload, and contribute to service development, quality improvement and governance.

• Support the development and delivery of an evidence‑based Occupational Therapy service within Langdon Hospital.
• Lead and supervise OT staff, including preceptors and students on clinical placements.
• Contribute to the development of the Forensic Occupational Therapy service.
• Manage a designated clinical caseload and collaborate with the wider OT and multidisciplinary teams.
• Support quality improvement projects and clinical governance activities.
• Maintain effective communication with service users, carers, MDT members and external agencies.
• Provide clinical supervision, preceptorship and training for Band 5 OTs and support staff.
• Produce and maintain accurate occupational therapy records and audit documentation.
• Manage finance, equipment and petty cash transactions in line with Trust policy.
• Ensure compliance with health‑safety, safeguarding and security policies.
• Engage in research and development activities, including audits and data collection.
• Act autonomously within the COT code of practice, attending regular supervision and performance appraisal.

• BSc (Hons) Degree in Occupational Therapy or equivalent; HCPC registration required.
• Post‑graduate experience in mental‑health OT or evidence of ongoing training in this area.
• Practice Educator accreditation (e.g., APPLE or equivalent).

• Clinical supervision of qualified and/or support staff.
• Experience with in secure mental‑health services and understanding of clinical governance.
• Knowledge of health‑safety, risk‑management and safeguarding policies.
• Experience managing conflicts and team dynamics.
• Minimum of two years’ experience at Band 5 level.
• Understanding of HR management policies.

• Comprehensive understanding of the Occupational Therapy Process.
• Proficiency with standardised and functional assessment instruments.
• Awareness of legal restraints affecting the rehabilitation of mentally disordered offenders.
• Knowledge of health‑legislation, CPA and risk‑assessment practices.

• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to manage difficult conversations.
• Computer literacy and competency with electronic record systems.
• Strong presentation, training and facilitation skills.
• Analytical judgment and reflective practice.
• Planning, organisational and time‑management skills.
• Positive, flexible and motivated approach to continuous learning.
