Overview
PHYSICIAN ASSISTANT - DR. ROMER role at Orthopaedic Institute of Dayton (OID), part of JIS Orthopedics.

A physician assistant employed by Orthopaedic Institute of Dayton (OID), an Ortho Alliance Partner Practice, is expected to assist in the medical and surgical care of patients in both the inpatient and outpatient setting. The PA reports to the attending physician and participates in all aspects of patient care as indicated and performs duties described herein.
Position Responsibilities/Standards Outpatient Clinics- Attend outpatient clinics and participate in initial evaluation and longitudinal care of patients.
- Obtain detailed medical history and perform comprehensive physical examinations.
- Order and review diagnostic testing including radiographs, CT scans, MRIs, EMGs, and DEXA scans.
- Conduct procedures under supervision, including management of closed fractures with casting/splinting and aspiration/injection of bursae and joints.
- Develop and implement plan of care with attending supervision.
- Document evaluations, care and services in the medical record in a timely fashion.
- Refer for consultations when indicated; provide pre- and post-operative patient education.
- Respond to telephone inquiries and provide appropriate medical care or referrals.
- Communicate with referring or primary care physicians, athletic training and physical therapy staff regarding patient care and treatment.
- Provide follow-up and health maintenance care, adjust medications per protocols or as directed by the attending physician.
- Prescribe medications to accomplish the plan of treatment as delineated by the attending physician.
- Coordinate tasks with other healthcare team members to facilitate patient flow.
- Understand current CMS guidelines for E&M coding and basic EMR usage.
- Prepare patients for surgery, including operative setup, positioning, skin preparation and local anesthesia as indicated.
- Function as first or second assistant in the operating room, including exposure, dissection, wound closure, graft materials, dressings and immobilization.
- Assist the attending physician in preoperative and postoperative records, prescriptions and visuals as needed.
- Perform pre-operative history and physical examination as needed.
- Complete inpatient records as directed and notify attending physicians of any unusual events.
- Provide routine medical management of inpatient care, including diagnostic testing, medications, nutrition and adjunctive care.
- Participate in multidisciplinary rounds and communicate treatment plans with staff and families.
- Manage discharge planning and follow-up care.
Special Requirements
- Responsibilities after hours or weekends vary by physician and circumstance; may cover sports physicals, events or clinic coverage at the attending physician’s discretion.
- May assist with hospital call responsibilities as required.
- May assist in triaging or managing emergency department patients; not a routine practice.
- May mentor students as an informal educator or clinical preceptor.
- Graduate of a CAAHEP-approved Physician Assistant Training program.
- Certified by NCCPA or eligible to sit for the exam.
- Licensure or eligibility to practice as a Physician Assistant in the State of Ohio and other relevant states.
- If prescriptive authority is requested, evidence of prescriptive authority eligibility as approved by the State Medical Board of Ohio.
- Maintains CME hours for recertification (50 hours CME Category 1 and 50 hours CME Category II) every two years, and recertification examination every six years; maintains Ohio licensure per guidelines.
This position has no direct reports but provides training and guidance to clinic support staff; may participate in hiring, corrective actions, terminations and evaluations of clinical staff as appropriate.
