Job Summary

Science teachers/advisors serve as advocates and guides for students’ learning based on individual needs and gifts. They help students plan and achieve learning goals, build relationships, and create optimal learning experiences in advisory groups.

Qualifications
  • Valid teaching license or certificate for the assigned grade and/or subject(s)
  • Effective interpersonal skills with children and adults
  • A broad range of interests and experience, with a passion for learning
  • Solid basic knowledge in core content areas
  • Prior relevant teaching experience preferred
  • Sound classroom‑management skills
  • Ability to improvise and solve problems
  • Experience with technology integration in teaching and learning
  • Effective in an interdisciplinary, team environment
  • Demonstrated initiative, leadership, problem‑solving, data collection, and analysis
  • Entrepreneurial spirit
  • Affinity for supporting students as individual learners

Duties / Essential Functions
  • Serve as a positive role model for students
  • Demonstrate a supportive, enthusiastic, and encouraging attitude toward all students
  • Implement DECA’s mission and core values through instruction and action
  • Advocate for students and families
  • Celebrate student accomplishments
  • Develop meaningful relationships with each student and parent/guardian
  • Be available to students and parents for educational purposes, including outside normal school hours when necessary
  • Facilitate student learning plans with families or guardians
  • Forecast educational needs of each student
  • Align instructional programs with content standards set by the Ohio Department of Education
  • Plan a program of instruction that meets challenging and individualized needs, interests, and abilities
  • Employ a variety of educational techniques and set clear objectives for each student
  • Provide supplemental and educational activities supporting growth
  • Facilitate student learning outside the school building via field experiences
  • Assist in identifying, establishing, and monitoring learning opportunities
  • Ensure students use prescribed materials
  • Hold students accountable for academic progress
  • Report student progress through scheduled reports, phone calls, and weekly meetings
  • Attend faculty meetings and staff development sessions as directed by the principal
  • Maintain accurate and factual records of each student as required by law
  • Assess and facilitate the whole learner: physical, social, emotional, intellectual, and academic needs
  • Design and adjust individualized learning plans
  • Mediate student conflicts and collaborate on intervention strategies
  • Transport students in compliance with traffic ordinances and school policy
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the principal
  • Continuously improve professional competence
