About the Role
The University of Dayton invites applications and nominations for the newly created, cabinet-level position of Vice President for Emerging Technologies (VP-ET) . This visionary role represents a bold commitment to shaping how artificial intelligence and emerging technologies will transform higher education while remaining deeply rooted in our Catholic, Marianist mission.
Reporting jointly to the Provost & Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs and the Vice President & Chief Information Officer , the VP-ET will serve as the university's senior leader responsible for developing and executing a comprehensive strategy to integrate AI and emerging technologies across our academic mission, operational functions, and community engagement. This dual reporting structure ensures the VP-ET can strengthen both the academic enterprise and operational excellence while maintaining strategic alignment between the university's two key technology leaders.
As a member of the President's Cabinet and regular participant on the Board of Trustees Academic Affairs and Research & Scholarship Committees, the VP-ET will provide strategic counsel on adapting to changes in the higher education landscape and capitalizing on new opportunities presented by technology. This role offers the unique opportunity to work collaboratively with faculty, deans, and senior leadership to shape institutional strategy, influence academic innovation, and ensure the University remains a leader in both academic excellence and technological integration.
Key Responsibilities Strategic Leadership & Vision- Develop and maintain a comprehensive, university-wide AI and emerging technology strategy aligned with Catholic and Marianist values
- Advise the President's Cabinet and Board of Trustees on AI trends, opportunities, and risks
- Build and execute an innovation roadmap ensuring initiatives align with mission and strategic objectives
- Co-chair the AI Steering Committee and lead structures advancing AI integration
- Scan the technological horizon to identify emerging trends and position the university competitively
- Collaborate with the Provost, deans, and faculty to integrate AI literacy and application skills across the curriculum
- Support faculty in discerning appropriate integration of AI tools into pedagogy across disciplines
- Partner with faculty development units to provide training on AI for teaching, learning, and assessment
- Ensure graduates are prepared to lead in an AI-enabled world
- Enhance the student experience through prudent and imaginative use of technology
- Facilitate selective research in pedagogical innovation and the ethical dimensions of AI
- Advance scholarship on AI deployment consistent with Catholic social teaching and the Common Good
- Build partnerships with other Catholic institutions to advance shared AI research goals
- Lead university-wide dialogue on the ethical, mission-driven integration of AI technologies
- Foster an environment encouraging experimentation and risk-taking guided by Marianist principles of adaptation and change
- Build strategic partnerships with technology companies, research institutions, and other organizations
- Empower faculty and staff with training and resources to explore innovative ideas
- Promote collaborative problem-solving across departments and disciplines
- Partner with the CIO and administrative units to identify AI opportunities for efficiency and service improvement
- Oversee prioritization of projects and allocation of AI-related resources
- Ensure compliance with ethical, legal, and regulatory requirements for AI use
- Support operations and student support functions in leveraging technology effectively
Required:
- Advanced degree (master's or doctorate) in a relevant field
- Significant knowledge of higher education, technology strategy, or related fields
- Substantive senior leadership experience (4+ years) with proven track record driving innovation and digital transformation, preferably in higher education
