Summary

The Biomedical Equipment Technician (BMET) is responsible for performing inspections, calibrations, diagnostics, maintenance, and repairs on a wide range of medical and non‑medical support equipment, including but not limited to medical package tools, generators, and environmental control units. The BMET ensures all work is conducted in compliance with original equipment manufacturer (OEM) guidance, DoD instructions, applicable regulations, and unit directives.

Responsibilities
  • Ensure biomedical equipment complies with federal, state, and applicable regulatory requirements; implement quality control standards and maintain budget and vendor relationships.
  • Repair, install, maintain, calibrate, and inspect complex medical equipment, instrumentation, and systems.
  • Assign routine repairs, inspections, and installations to subordinates and observe their performance.
  • Perform preventive maintenance and electrical safety testing of clinical equipment, devices, and systems, and monitor completion of preventive maintenance activities performed by outside vendors (when applicable).
  • Review outcomes of preventive maintenance actions and make recommendations to department staff concerning improvements.
  • Perform complex technical inspections of new, used or reconditioned military medical equipment.
  • Recommend new equipment and testing procedures.
  • Follow original equipment manufacturer guidance, AFI, regulations, and unit direction.
  • Perform routine inspections, preventive maintenance, and calibration of biomedical equipment to ensure compliance with manufacturer specifications and safety regulations.
  • Diagnose and troubleshoot malfunctions in medical devices, performing necessary repairs or coordinating with vendors for service when required.
  • Maintain detailed service records, documenting repairs, maintenance actions, and performance evaluations.
  • Assist in the installation and configuration of new biomedical equipment, ensuring proper functionality.
  • Manage life cycle, diagnostics, maintenance, and repair of medical and non‑medical support equipment (e.g., oxygen generating systems, radiographic diagnostics equipment, life support systems).
  • Determine associated support items of equipment to perform scheduled services and maintenance repairs and calibrations; supply support and provisioning requirements; train personnel.
  • Prepare necessary support documentation and purchase requisitions of parts.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Necessary Skills and Knowledge
  • Basic knowledge of biomedical equipment operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting.
  • Familiarity with electrical and mechanical systems related to medical devices.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to follow technical manuals and safety guidelines.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a healthcare team.
  • Effective communication skills to provide technical support and document service activities.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree desired but may not be required if the minimum field experience requirement is met.
  • Graduated from the DoD Biomedical Maintenance Course or an accredited civilian Biomedical Maintenance Course.
  • Completed Planmeca digital dental course no later than 12 months after start.
  • Minimum 10 years of field experience, including at least four years as a level II BMET, in managing inspections, calibrations, diagnostics, maintenance, life cycle management, repair of medical equipment, equipment acquisition, and safety within OEM guidance and local/state/federal regulations.
  • Ability to pass client background screening for security clearance.
  • Travel may be required for this position.

  • Advanced degree in a related field.
