Job Summary
Under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse, provides nursing care within the scope of licensure for assigned patients according to established nursing standards and hospital policies and procedures.
Essential Functions
- Administers medication, performs treatments, and patient care responsibilities as prescribed under the supervision of a Registered Nurse.
- Consults with and keeps the Registered Nurse informed of activities, symptoms, reactions, and changes in the patient’s condition.
- Provides appropriate pain management techniques and educates the patient and family regarding pain management.
- Administers medication following the five rights of medication administration within scope of practice.
- Assists with rehabilitation and treatment of patients in accordance with the medical plan of care, updating and revising the plan under the supervision of a Registered Nurse.
- Assists physicians with examinations, treatments, and procedures, performing services requiring technical and manual skills as directed.
- Treats patients and their families with respect and dignity, addressing psychosocial, cultural, ethnic, and spiritual needs.
- Interacts professionally with patients and families, involving them in the care plan.
- Identifies and addresses psychosocial needs, communicating with Social Services/Discharge Planner about in-hospital and post-discharge needs.
- Interprets patient data to identify age-specific needs and provide appropriate care.
- Performs all patient care aspects in an environment that promotes safety and reduces errors.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities/Expectations
- Knowledge of medication administration based on patient age and condition.
- Basic computer skills.
- Ability to organize tasks, develop action plans, set priorities, and work under stress.
- Ability to maintain good working relationships within the department and with other departments.
- Good and regular attendance.
- Fluent in reading, writing, and speaking English.
- Travel requirement: 0%.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Education
- Graduate of an accredited program for licensed vocational/practical nurses.
Licenses/Certifications
- Licensed Practical/Vocational Nurse License.
- BLS Certification required.
- Intravenous Therapy and Blood Certifications preferred.
- ACLS may be required in certain care areas.
Experience
- Minimum six months’ prior experience in an acute care setting preferred.
