Position: Quantum Optics Research at the Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT)
Overview

The Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT), located at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio, offers post-Master's fellowships administered by Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE) under a DoD sponsorship. This opportunity provides hands-on research experience in quantum optics.

Responsibilities
  • Collect experimental data
  • Analyze results and simulate environments of interest
  • Engage in Quantum Information and Sensing research under mentorship

Anticipated Start Date

AFIT seeks to begin these appointments in August or September 2025. Exact start dates are determined at the time of selection in coordination with the selected candidate. Applications are reviewed on an ongoing basis and internships are filled as qualified candidates are identified.

Appointment Length

8-12 weeks, with the possibility of extension depending on funding, project assignment, program rules, and participant availability.

About AFIT

The Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT) is the Air Force’s graduate school of engineering and management and its institution for technical professional continuing education. AFIT is a component of Air University and Air Education and Training Command, and is committed to defense-focused graduate and professional education and research to sustain technological superiority for air, space, and cyber forces.

About ORISE

This program is administered by Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE). Participants do not enter into an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DoD or any other office or agency. You will be affiliated with ORISE for appointment administration. Proof of health insurance is required and can be obtained through ORISE.

Qualifications

The qualified candidate will have completed a master's degree within the last five years and have a GPA of 3.5 or higher. Highly competitive applicants will have education and/or experience in one or more of the following:

  • Quantum optics experimentation
