School Bus Driver

Position Location: Beavercreek Service Center

Position Type: Transportation/Bus Driver

Hours: 5 hours/day (Guaranteed), 190 days per school year (including 10 paid holidays)

Starting Rate: $25.51 - $26.49/hour (dependent upon experience)

Position Purpose

Provides for the safe, efficient, and courteous transportation of students. Keeps the transportation supervisor informed about bus activities and emerging issues.

Essential Functions
  • Operates the bus according to all motor vehicle laws and practices defensive driving techniques.
  • Upholds board policies and follows administrative procedures.
  • Promotes a favorable image of the school district.
  • Provides dependable service, maintains routes and schedules, prioritizing safety over delays.
  • Transports authorized passengers only, at approved stops, and maintains route sheets.
  • Performs safety inspections and reports issues.
  • Assists students as needed, promoting independence.
  • Supervises loading/unloading procedures and operates wheelchair lifts, ensuring safety.
  • Monitors student behavior, enforces safety and conduct policies.
  • Reports disciplinary issues and vandalism; maintains school property standards.
  • Performs other related tasks as assigned.
  • Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
    • Knowledge of traffic laws, road signs, and related information.
    • Manual dexterity for operating and cleaning the bus.
    • Visual and auditory acuity within normal ranges, with correction if needed.
    • Effective communication skills.
    • Organizational, problem-solving, and time management skills.
    • Ability to learn from manuals and follow traffic signs.
    • Physical ability to move through the bus and classrooms.
    • Ability to maintain composure under pressure and in emergencies.
    • Ability to establish cooperative relationships.
    Physical and Mental Demands, Work Hazards

    Includes professionalism, effective communication, teamwork, handling interruptions, conflict resolution, physical activities like lifting and climbing, and maintaining punctuality. Travel to meetings and work sites required.

    Qualifications Profile
    • High School Diploma
    • Health requirements (e.g., TB test), clear criminal record
    • Ohio Pre-Service School Bus Driver Training Program completion
    • Valid CDL with school bus endorsement and a good driving record
    • Pre-employment and ongoing drug tests
    • Physical ability to operate and manage students with disabilities
    • Prior experience is desirable
