Senior Accountant – Grants & Contracts

Opportunity

Reporting to the Director of Accounting – Financial Aid and Sponsored Programs, the Senior Accountant will have professional responsibility for post‑award administration and related accounting duties, including recording, analyzing, and reconciling transactions and accounts. The role also involves developing, implementing, and maintaining policies, procedures, and internal controls to ensure compliance with laws, regulations, contracts, and grant/contract agreements to protect the University’s financial statements and funding.

Job Functions, Duties, or Accountabilities
  • Work with the Office of Sponsored Research Administration to support the financial management of grant and contract‑funded projects, including periodic reviews, financial reporting, and preparation and submission of invoices and other sponsor‑specific forms.
  • Reconcile accounts receivable, ensure timely payments, and apply payments. Track deadlines for invoicing, reporting, and award/contract closeout.
  • Assist with preparation of Schedule of Expenditures of Federal Awards (SEFA) and related disclosures in accordance with GAAP and Uniform Guidance, and compile documents for audits.
  • Provide monthly, quarterly, and annual reconciliations, reports, and schedules for defined financial statement accounts; identify unallowable expenditures and process transactions in Workday.
  • Interpret and apply laws, regulations, contracts, grant agreements, and accounting standards; prepare position papers as required.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications Required Education and Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Business Administration.

Required Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities
  • Minimum of five to ten years of professional accounting or finance experience.
  • Experience assisting with preparation of SEFA.
  • Higher education experience preferred.
  • Excellent customer service skills to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Knowledge of GAAP and FASB statutory accounting principles.
  • Experience interpreting and applying governing laws, regulations, and grant regulations, including Uniform Guidance.
  • Demonstrated accounting experience.
  • Strong problem‑solving skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication.
  • Painstaking attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team.
  • Ability to meet deadlines while handling multiple concurrent priorities.
  • Proficient computer skills with Microsoft Office;
    Workday Financial Management experience preferred.
  • Professionalism, discretion, and confidentiality.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s degree and/or CPA desirable.
