Position Summary The Life Safety Officer is responsible for ensuring the facility’s ongoing compliance with Life Safety Code (NFPA 101), NFPA standards, CMS Conditions of Participation, and Florida AHCA requirements. This role oversees fire safety systems, emergency preparedness documentation, inspections, drills, and corrective actions to protect residents, staff, and visitors and to ensure survey readiness at all times.
Duties and Responsibilities Life Safety & Fire Protection- Conduct and document daily, monthly, quarterly, and annual Life Safety inspections
- Monitor compliance with NFPA 101, NFPA 25, 72, 80, 99, and 110
- Inspect and maintain:
- Fire and smoke barriers
- Fire doors and smoke doors
- Means of egress
- Emergency lighting
- Fire extinguishers
- Identify and coordinate repairs for Life Safety deficiencies
- Ensure corridors and exits remain free of obstructions
- Maintain inspection and testing documentation for:
- Fire alarm systems
- Sprinkler systems
- Emergency generators and transfer switches
- Coordinate licensed vendor inspections and testing
- Review reports for deficiencies and ensure timely correction
- Maintain generator testing logs and fuel documentation
- Maintain the facility’s Emergency Preparedness Plan (EPP)
- Ensure compliance with 42 CFR 483.73
- Maintain:
- Hazard Vulnerability Analysis (HVA)
- Transfer and vendor agreements
- Communication plans
- Resident medical information transfer procedures
- Coordinate and document:
- Fire drills (all shifts)
- Emergency preparedness exercises
- After‑action reports
- Maintain survey‑ready Life Safety and Emergency Preparedness binders
- Accompany Life Safety and AHCA surveyors during inspections
- Respond to surveyor requests and provide documentation promptly
- Participate in the development and implementation of Plans of Correction
- Track corrective actions to completion
- Train staff on:
- RACE and PASS procedures
- Fire response and evacuation procedures
- Life Safety awareness
- Participate in orientation and annual in‑service training
- Assist with mock surveys and drills
- Maintain accurate, current, and organized records
- Ensure all required logs are completed and signed
- Report Life Safety concerns immediately to leadership
- Participate in QAPI meetings as related to Life Safety
- High school diploma or equivalent required
- Minimum 5 years experience in Life Safety, facilities management, healthcare maintenance, or related field preferred in skilled nursing facilities
- Experience in a nursing home, hospital, or healthcare setting strongly preferred
- Working knowledge of:
- NFPA Life Safety Code
- CMS K‑Tags and E‑Tags
- AHCA survey process
- Strong organizational and documentation skills
- Ability to identify Life Safety risks and take corrective action
- Effective communication skills
- Ability to interact professionally with surveyors
- Ability to walk facility frequently
- Ability to climb ladders and access above‑ceiling areas
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds
- Ability to respond during emergencies, including after‑hours if needed
- Full‑time or part‑time (facility dependent)
- Or can work at your own hours
- Facility remains survey‑ready at all times
- Documentation is complete, accurate, and readily available
- Timely correction of identified Life Safety issues
