Associate General Counsel

Overview

The Office of the General Counsel at Bethune-Cookman University is conducting a search for an Associate General Counsel. This position will report to the General Counsel.

Division: Legal Affairs

• Provide advice and counsel to the University’s senior leaders, schools and colleges, and administrative areas pertaining to a comprehensive and sophisticated range of legal issues. Key responsibilities include matters such as business, tax and corporate transactions; employment law and labor relations; negotiating and reviewing contracts; grants; liability, risk management and insurance matters; real estate transactions; laws pertaining to students; regulatory compliance;
  
  intellectual property; and general academic matters.
• All lawyers in the General Counsel’s Office are expected to work collaboratively within the University community. They must manage a wide variety of complicated issues in a fast-paced higher education environment, exercise independent judgment and function effectively with internal and external audiences.

• Ability to translate complex problems into practical solutions
• High ethical standards and mature judgment
• Strong aptitude for handling a variety of complex legal matters, working independently and within a team environment
• Ability to function effectively in a fast-paced environment with multiple and changing priorities and objectives
• A demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion
• A strong working knowledge of the use of technology to streamline processes
• A positive, can-do attitude, humility and a sense of humor
• A member in good standing with the Florida Bar, or have the ability to be admitted within twelve months of hire

• Prior in-house experience, particularly in higher education
• Experience with litigation and/or dispute resolution
• Significant experience with general business law and counseling
• An understanding of HBCUs

• Juris Doctor degree from an ABA-accredited law school
• A minimum of five years relevant legal practice experience in a high-quality and professional environment
