Position Overview

The responsibility of the CNC Lathe Machinist position is to set up and operate CNC lathes—manufacturing complex and noncomplex parts while maintaining high quality standards and workmanship. The machinist is responsible for keeping the work area and equipment safe, clean, and organized.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Set up and operate CNC lathes 2+ axis conversational programming with live tooling and sub spindle.
  • Write and edit complex lathe programs.
  • Verify calibration of measuring equipment and set, read, and use manual measuring equipment.
  • Ensure dimensional and quality requirements of components.
  • Operate some manual lathes and milling machines if required.
  • Assist with general housekeeping of the shop as needed.
  • Wear PPE and ensure all employees and visitors follow ODI safety guidelines and procedures.
  • Communicate with engineers and planners daily to confirm routers and schedules are accurate.
  • Proactively identify and implement ways to reduce set‑up times, and communicate improvements to routers and schedules.
  • Train and mentor employees.
  • Participate in Lean processes, working with Planning, Quality, Peers, and Engineering to improve flow and increase throughput.
  • Identify potential cost reductions in product design and communicate to leads and engineering for evaluation.
Education and Experience
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • 1–2 years of experience in manual lathe and mill operation.
  • 3–5 years of experience in CNC lathe operation.
  • Experience in an engineer‑to‑order make‑to‑order shop environment.
  • Experience or training in and understanding of Lean Manufacturing Principles.
Job Knowledge,

Skills and Abilities
  • Proven ability to read and understand blueprints.
  • Working knowledge of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T).
  • Working knowledge of MS Office programs, e.g., Word, Excel, Outlook.
  • Demonstrated ability to set up a machine and run the job with no supervision.
  • Commitment to high quality standards and continuous improvement.
  • Knowledge of using all precision measuring tools of the shop.
  • Understand calibration cycles of measuring tools and gauges.
  • Support and assist with machine PM programs.
  • Demonstrated understanding of lathe programming languages.
  • Understand all machine hazard areas.
