Description

A major portion of the special education teacher’s time should be spent in the regular education classroom.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Support in the regular classroom includes the following:

  • Provide direct services to support general education teachers.
  • Consult with teachers on planning, adaptations, and accommodations.
  • Team teach in areas like language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies.
  • Assist with supervision of volunteers and aides for curriculum modifications and support.
  • Develop and implement behavior intervention plans with teachers and social workers.
  • Assist with grading and evaluation measures for students on caseload.

Other duties may be assigned.

Requirements

Time outside the classroom involves:

  • Participating in child study teams and evaluation processes.
  • Scheduling and conducting IEP meetings.
  • Writing goals, objectives, transition, and education plans.
  • Working with multidisciplinary teams for assessments.
  • Supporting curriculum modifications.
  • Engaging with parents to encourage participation.

Other duties may be assigned.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree with teacher certification and special education endorsement(s) or master’s degree for certification eligibility.
  • No experience required; preferred: successful teaching experience in special education.
  • Skilled in interviewing and treatment techniques.
  • Ability to formulate eligibility recommendations.
  • Initiative and understanding in working with students, parents, and staff.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Decision-making in accordance with policies and procedures.
