SummaryPerforms classroom tasks to assist teaching staff with instruction individualization. Only applicants licensed by the Alabama Licensure Board for Interpreters and Translators (ALBIT) will be considered.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Provides manual interpretation of instruction and classroom directions for students who are deaf.
- Interprets from spoken English to the IEP specified modality and vice versa.
- Provides, under supervision of a certified teacher, instruction in American Sign Language and written English to enable understanding of instructional concepts, language, and daily living activities.
- Provides one‑on‑one assistance and tutoring to students.
- Provides job coaching to students as required.
- Assists other students as needs and time permit.
- Provides formal and informal instruction to other staff in manual communication.
- Participates in planning and in‑service activities as appropriate.
- Helps supervise students during lunch periods, assemblies, field trips, and other activities.
- Maintains an ethical behavior and confidentiality of student information.
- Participates in professional development activities.
- Encourages communication and interaction between deaf/hard‑of‑hearing students and faculty, staff, students, and others.
- Prepares for demanding course material as necessary for successful interpreting and/or transliterating.
Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications Requirements Education & ExperienceOne year certificate from college or technical school, or three to six months related experience and/or training, or an equivalent combination of education and experience; at least an intermediate rating or better on the SCPI Rating Scale. Appropriate credentials must be provided.
Language Skills- Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
- Ability to write simple correspondence.
- Ability to effectively present information in one‑on‑one and small group situations.
- Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using common fractions and decimals.
- Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent.
- Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed written or oral instructions related to core academic subjects at the high school level.
- Ability to handle problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
- Regularly required to talk or hear while performing job duties.
- Frequently required to stand and walk.
- Occasionally required to sit, bend, stoop, squat, crouch, kneel, use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools, or controls and reach with hands and arms.
- Must routinely lift or move up to 10 pounds.
- Must occasionally lift, push, pull, or move up to 50 pounds.
- Specific vision abilities: close vision, distance vision, and ability to adjust focus.
Moderate noise level; occasional exposure to outside weather conditions for brief periods.
