Construction Inspector – DeKalb County Government
Salary: $48,381 - $77,894
Purpose of ClassificationTo conduct inspections and project oversight for construction projects to ensure adherence to applicable codes, regulations, contracts, design specifications, and quality standards.
Essential Functions- Conduct inspections and project oversight for diverse construction projects, including water and wastewater infrastructure, land development, roads, drainage, equipment installation, and other structures.
- Coordinate and oversee contractors; conduct weekly contractor meetings; schedule and coordinate inspections and meetings with County departments and other state and federal agencies; anticipate and prioritize inspections to minimize interference with project progress.
- Coordinate pre‑construction activities; perform initial site assessments; secure right‑of‑ways; research utility locations, staging, and other conditions using GIS, plats, property records, CCTV reports, and other sources.
- Inspect construction materials and workmanship for quality and contract compliance; visit sites; assess conditions; take samples for testing; verify quantities; use tools and test equipment.
- Inspect for adherence to safety protocols, project schedules, documentation requirements, and applicable codes.
- Review contracts, change orders, drawings, engineering reports, specifications, and progress reports to evaluate compliance.
- Approve pay applications, material orders, and as‑built drawings.
- Maintain records and prepare reports and documentation, including inspection reports and cost estimates.
- Investigate citizen complaints; explain projects and procedures; identify problems; determine remedies; issue work orders.
- Perform emergency response work; implement preparation and restoration strategies for inclement weather or emergencies; assess hazards; prioritize and initiate work orders.
- Collaborate with superintendents, crews, utility companies, EPA, GDOT, Corps of Engineers, and other agencies to coordinate work.
Associate degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or related field; three years of experience in construction inspection, construction project management, civil engineering, or public works construction, or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
Specific License or Certification RequiredMust possess and maintain a valid Georgia driver’s license. Select positions require Water Distribution Operator or Wastewater Systems Operator Licenses, Class A CDL, or Georgia Soil and Erosion Level 1B certification.
