Environmental Manager, Program / Project Manager
Salary Range: $76,553 - $123,250 Salary Grade: 24 FLSA:

The purpose of this classification is to develop and lead the County’s sustainability strategy to enhance environmental performance and long-term resilience by directing programs that reduce energy use and waste, expand renewable energy, promote sustainable operations, and ensure regulatory compliance.
Essential Functions- Manages, directs, and evaluates assigned staff; oversees employee work schedules to ensure adequate coverage and control; reviews timesheets; approves/processes employee concerns and problems and counsels or disciplines as appropriate; completes employee performance appraisals; directs work; acts as a liaison between employees and County administrators and elected officials; and trains staff in operations, policies, and procedures.
- Develops, manages, and refines the County’s sustainability strategies, goals, and implementation plans; integrates sustainability principles into County policies, programs, and operations.
- Oversees initiatives to improve environmental, social, and economic outcomes, including programs for renewable energy, water conservation, waste reduction, sustainable transportation, and resource efficiency; manages solar energy projects and other renewable energy efforts to support County sustainability goals.
- Ensures County operations comply with all relevant local, state, and federal environmental laws, standards, and regulations; serves as the primary point of contact for sustainability-related reporting and audits.
- Establishes and tracks key performance indicators (KPIs) for sustainability initiatives; prepares and presents reports on progress, outcomes, and opportunities for improvement to County leadership and governing bodies.
- Collaborates with internal departments, external agencies, community partners, and other stakeholders to advance shared sustainability objectives; communicates the County’s sustainability goals and achievements to residents, employees, and the public through reports and outreach initiatives.
- Identifies, evaluates, and mitigates sustainability-related risks; assesses and pursues opportunities for cost savings, efficiency, and innovation through sustainable practices.
- Develops and oversees training programs to promote sustainability awareness and practices among County employees; fosters a culture of sustainability and continuous improvement across all departments.
Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Sustainability, Public Administration, Business Administration, Engineering, or a related field is required (Master’s degree preferred); five years of progressively responsible experience in sustainability, environmental management, energy management, or a related field; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.
Specific License or Certification RequiredMust possess and maintain a valid Georgia driver’s license.
