Position: Certified NP/PA - Vascular Surgery SMS-3660 - Springfield & Decatur

Description

The Certified Nurse Practitioner/ Physician Assistant is a member of a multidisciplinary team responsible for the evaluation and treatment of patients with vascular disease. They act as a clinician, coordinator, consultant, educator, leader and researcher.

Duties Service (75%)
  • A. Demonstrates commitment to the mission and behavioral standards of SIU School of Medicine.
  • B. Coordinates delivery of care in the vascular surgery clinic with physicians and other health‑care professionals.
  • C. Assesses and documents the needs of patients and family members using physical assessment skills.
  • D. Participates in planning, developing, organizing and evaluating the Vascular Surgery programs for continuity of care.
  • E. Develops, implements and reviews medical and nursing protocols for vascular surgery patients from referring institutions.
  • F. Participates in interpreting assessment data to determine actual or potential problems.
  • G. Assists in formulating plans of care with physicians and other health‑care professionals; plans, implements, and evaluates nursing intentions based on assessed needs.
  • H. Facilitates continuity of care through referrals of patients and contacts referring physicians via phone and follow‑up letters.
  • I. Acts as a patient and family advocate using the nursing process and problem‑solving techniques.
  • J. Rounds on hospitalized patients to assure transition of care between hospital, home and outpatient settings.
  • K. Responds appropriately in emergency situations.
  • L. Reports risk management situations using the hospital notification system.
  • M. Performs minor procedures in the clinic as instructed by the surgeon.
  • N. Acts as primary or secondary SIU Vascular call person for all vascular consults at Springfield Memorial Hospital, Saint John’s Hospital, and Decatur Memorial Hospital.
Teaching (10%)
  • A. Provides patient and family education on diagnosis, treatment, protocols and diagnostic testing in vascular surgery.
  • B. Teaches patients and family members about necessary post‑op care.
  • C. Develops, reviews and evaluates patient educational material related to vascular disease.
  • D. Participates in professional educational activities related to vascular surgery patients.
Research (10%)
  • A. Applies a scientific process to advance care for patients.
  • B. Enrolls and maintains patients on research protocols related to health and prevention with physicians and data manager.
  • C. Initiates and participates in nursing and interdisciplinary research through appropriate committees.
  • D. Publishes approved research findings with nursing and other colleagues.
Administration (5%)
  • A. Initiates and participates in development of patient care standards and policies via appropriate committees.
  • B. As team member, participates in strategic direction for the Division of Vascular Surgery.
  • C. Demonstrates responsibility and accountability for professional status.
  • D. Promotes positive interpersonal relationships and effective communication.
  • E. Recognizes and utilizes change agent opportunities by recommending and introducing practice innovations.
  • F. Applies total quality management to plan and implement change.
  • G. Acts as consultant to nurses and other team members regarding complex patient problems.
  • H. Provides telephone consultation to potential clients and health professionals about current vascular surgical protocols.
Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications
  • Certified Nurse Practitioner:
  • Graduate of an accredited Nurse Practitioner program.
  • Received passing score on national certifying exam.
  • Ability to be licensed in Illinois as a Nurse Practitioner.
  • Sensitive to needs of underrepresented minority populations.
    • Physician Assistant‑Certified:
  • Graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant program.
  • Received a passing score on the national certifying exam.
  • Licensed as a Physician Assistant in Illinois (or eligibility for licensure).
  • Sensitive to needs of underrepresented minority populations.
