Position Summary

As a Utility Inspection & Locating Technician (Gas), you help protect communities by performing gas leak surveys and damage prevention/utility locating prior to excavation. You’ll patrol mains and services, mark mains and services, use approved detection instruments and electromagnetic (EM) locating equipment, identify and report abnormal operating conditions (AOCs), communicate with homeowners and contractors, and document work to client standards—supporting the 811 process and public safety.

Regional & Work Environment Considerations

Work occurs along city streets, highways, neighborhoods, easements, and customer properties in all weather. Sites may include high-traffic areas, uneven terrain, embankments, wet conditions, and excavation sites. Expect substantial walking and driving between assignments.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Perform gas leak surveys using approved instruments; identify and report AOCs and leaks.
  • Perform utility locates using EM locating equipment; accurately mark (paint and flag) and protect underground facilities.
  • Interpret 811 tickets, client procedures, maps/prints, and alignment sheets; verify work areas and scope.
  • Document work thoroughly (photos, notes, GIS/mobile apps) and submit timely, accurate reports.
  • Communicate with homeowners, contractors/excavators, and utility/client contacts to clarify scopes and resolve issues.
  • Follow PHMSA/Operator Qualification (OQ) procedures and client-specific standards.
  • Operate a company vehicle safely; maintain tools, PPE, instruments, and good housekeeping.
  • Support after-hours/emergency work, overtime, weekends, and holidays as business needs require.

Travel Expectations

Project travel may range from local day travel to extended overnight assignments (up to 100% travel on some projects). Lodging and per diem are provided per policy when overnight travel is required.

Qualifications

Required

  • Ability to pass a thorough background check and pre-employment drug screen required as a condition of employment
  • Eligible to obtain and maintain a DOT Medical Certification as required by project locations.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain required OQs for leak survey and/or locating tasks (company-paid training).
  • Comfortable using smartphones/tablets and field data collection apps.
  • Physical ability to walk 2–10 miles/day on varied terrain and weather, lift/carry up to 50 lbs, bend/squat, and occasionally lift covers to access assets.

Preferred

  • Prior gas leak survey and/or utility locating experience (811).
  • OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 (Construction or General Industry).
  • Experience with vacuum excavation, GPR, or additional utility types is a plus.

Driver Qualifications

Maintaining driver eligibility is mandatory. A valid driver’s license is considered an essential function of employment in field operations. Failure to obtain or maintain driver eligibility may affect employment status and/or eligibility for certain job assignments, unless given a Human Resources accommodation.
