Starting Pay: $30.31/hour Increases to: $31.79/hour after six months

Are you a skilled mechanic with a passion for keeping vehicles in top-notch condition? The City of Decatur’s Transportation Services Department is hiring a Transit Fleet
Mechanic to play a vital role in maintaining and repairing our transit vehicles and equipment.

In this hands-on, skilled position, you’ll diagnose and repair gasoline and diesel engines, perform preventive maintenance, and occasionally showcase your welding expertise by fabricating parts. If you enjoy solving mechanical challenges, working with advanced tools, and contributing to your community, this is the job for you!

This full-time position involves working weekends and holidays. Scheduled working hours are Monday – Thursday 8:00 a.m.

- 4:30 p.m. and Saturday 4:30 a.m.

- 1:00 p.m.

  • Repair and Maintenance
    :
    Perform diagnostics, maintenance, and general repair work on city vehicles, including buses, cutaways, vans, support vehicles, and other assets as assigned. Inspect, repair, adjust, and replace necessary units and parts as needed.
  • Parts Management
    :
    Order required parts and salvage usable parts when possible.
  • Preventive Maintenance
    :
    Conduct routine preventive maintenance to ensure vehicles and equipment remain in optimal condition.
  • Reporting
    :
    Prepare and maintain standard repair and maintenance work reports.
Technical Knowledge:
  • Operating principles and maintenance standards of gasoline and diesel engines.
  • Practices, methods, tools, and equipment used in vehicle and equipment mechanic trade work.
  • Knowledge of various types of welding, including arc, acetylene, torch, MIG, and TIG welding.
Technical Abilities:
  • Diagnose, repair, and maintain vehicles and equipment.
  • Use and care for manual, mechanical, and power tools, as well as welding and diagnostic equipment.
Communication and Independence:
  • Understand and follow oral and written instructions, including repair manuals.
  • Work independently with limited supervision.
Education and Training:
  • High school diploma or equivalent or graduation from vocational school.
  • Approved apprenticeship or training in vehicle and equipment repair work, or equivalent combination of training and experience.
Licensing and

Certifications:
  • Possess, or obtain within six months, a valid Illinois Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).
Health and Safety Compliance:
  • Ability to pass a Department of Transportation (Use the "Apply for this Job" box below). to pass pre-employment and random Federal Transit Administration (FTA) drug and alcohol testing.
Special Requirements :
  • Provide own hand tools for mechanical work (SAE and metric).

Examination Process
  • Written Examination
    :
    All applicants must take a written examination. The passing criterion for the written examination is 70.00%.
  • Oral Interview
    :
    Applicants passing the written test must pass an oral interview with a minimum score of 70.00%.
  • Veteran Points
    :
    Applicants passing the written test and oral interview may be eligible to receive 5.00 veteran preference points added to their final examination score.
  • Seniority Points
    :
    Applicable persons passing the written test and oral interview will receive 0.50 seniority preference points for each full year of continuous City of Decatur AFSCME service. A maximum of 10.0 points may be added to the final examination score.
Residency
