As the Specialty Physician Assistant under general direction of the clinical supervisor, you assume full responsibility in assessing, diagnosing, and treating those patients requiring sub-specialty treatment such as orthopedics. You will work in a collaborative team practice that recognizes the patient as the central focus. You will support the physician in situations requiring physical assessment and complex communications with patients. Serves as a patient educator in areas of specialization.

  • Join a dynamic surgical team! This position offers hands‑on experience in the Operating Room 1-2 days per week at New England Baptist Hospital or local surgery centers.
  • 4‑day work week
Primary Responsibilities:
  • Performs physical assessments on patients with specialized conditions in areas such as orthopedics. Determines urgent versus emergent problems and triages patients to appropriate specialty physicians. Assesses and treats patients with support from other physician colleagues. May develop and implement a plan of care for these patients, as well as prescribe medications, exercises and/or other treatments.
  • Performs minor operative procedures including suturing and injections. Orthopedic clinician should be proficient in cast application.
  • Collaborates with the physician in the management of patient care. Such support may include ordering and interpreting laboratory work and other diagnostic studies, assisting the physician in operative procedures, performing pre‑operative histories and physical exams, and maintaining continuity of care through the exchange of information with outside health and social agencies.
  • Serves as a liaison between primary care providers and specialists. Consults with primary care providers on issues related to patient care.
  • Teaches and counsels individuals and groups with regard to specific health care needs. Serves as an educator in areas of specialization.
  • Participates in the development of health education programs.
  • First assist needed in operating room on total joint cases.

Required Qualifications:
  • Graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant degree program
  • Currently or eligible for board certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA)
  • Active and unrestricted APC license in the State of Massachusetts
  • Graduate of a State‑approved school of Nursing and Nurse Practitioner program
  • Possess a current license to practice as a professional nurse in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, and authorization to practice in the expanded role
  • Nurse Practitioners must be 1st assist certificated. (CSFA) Surgical First Assistant Certification
  • Current active Mass DPH Controlled Substances Registration or ability to obtain post‑hire, per state regulations
  • Current active DEA licensure/prescriptive authority or ability to obtain post‑hire, per state regulations
  • Maintains BLS certification, professional certification as appropriate
Preferred Qualifications:
  • 2+ years of experience in orthopedics
