Application Engineer (Reports to Engineering Manager)

Summary of Essential Functions

Under limited supervision, the Application Engineer plans, evaluates and develops design solutions to bearing and labyrinth seal issues associated with high speed rotating equipment. Using various evaluation tools and techniques the Application Engineer works with Sales, Design and the Customer to develop technical proposals and presentations to address field problems and to provide product alternatives to increase reliability and performance of the equipment.

The Application Engineer is responsible for the technical content of all engineered projects from quotation to final installation of the product.

Specific Duties , Activities and Responsibilities
  • Technical lead in the evaluation of bearing and labyrinth seal solutions for customer’s equipment.
  • Working with Sales, develops quotations and presentations to define the value added in the proposed upgrade.
  • Travel to customer site may be required to obtain technical information required for the evaluation and to oversee installation/startup of the final solution.
  • Perform all engineering calculations and design drawings required to evaluate the proposed solution.
  • Devise new approaches to problems encountered in assignments.
  • Work with customers and sales personnel regarding material changes or modifications of customer equipment for bearing or labyrinth seal upgrades.
  • Communicate orally and in writing with customers, sales, company personnel and vendors providing counseling, advice and technical assistance.
  • Responsible for special projects and programs.
  • Submit technical papers and case studies for peer reviewed presentation/publication.
  • Approve/reject manufactured and purchased items based on acceptable deviation and basic design practices.
  • Additional duties as assigned.
EHS Requirements
  • Additional duties and responsibilities will vary based upon departmental needs.
  • Complete all work in a safe manner and follow all safety requirements consistent with supporting the Company’s goals.
  • Lifting guidelines in accordance with the Manual Lifting Guidelines noted in the Safety Handbook.
  • Follow all environmental requirements consistent with supporting the company’s environmental performance goals.
  • Complete, and actively participate in all other EHS training requirements.
Position Requirements
  • Requires a BSME or higher.
  • A minimum of 5 years’ experience in rotating equipment. Fluid film bearing experience a plus.
  • Basic understanding of tribology, rotor dynamics and vibration analysis.
  • Proficient in 3-D CAD.
  • High level of competence with Microsoft Office programs; programming capabilities a plus.
  • Professional Engineering registration in the State of Texas a plus.
  • Travel requirement at 15%.
Physical/Mental Requirements
  • Must be able to sit for extended periods of time; a minimum of 2 hours.
  • Must be able to maneuver to all areas of the office, shop, warehouse, or manufacturing plant.
  • Must be able to lift up to 20 pounds and carry up to 10 pounds.
  • Must be able to bend, reach, kneel, twist, and grip items while working at assigned desk area.
  • Must have the manual dexterity and coordination to operate office equipment, including a 10 key adding machine, PC, facsimile machine and photo copier.
  • Must be able to work at a fast pace.
  • Must be able to simultaneously manage several objectives, and reassign priorities.
  • Must be able to tolerate changing priorities, and complete assignments despite frequent interruptions.
  • Must be able to read, write, speak and understand English.
  • Must be able to respond to visual and aural cues.
Work Environment

Work environment is typically considered within a Miba facility during normal or extended business hours to include offices, manufacturing plants and repair facilities. Work environment may also include customer sites and meeting venues.

  • Steel-toed shoes and safety glasses required at all times on the shop floor. Additional PPE requirements for specific tasks.
