Utility Locates Technician

A. Smith & Associates is looking for Utility Locate Technicians. We are looking for people who are familiar with different types of EM (electromagnetic) equipment and have performed electromagnetic (EM) locates locating water, sewer, gas, electric, and communications for construction projects or 811 locate tickets.

• Accurately locate and mark underground utility lines using industry-standard equipment (e.g., electromagnetic and ground-penetrating radar tools).
• Have knowledge of field equipment such as Topcon E series, Trimble GPS, Trimble HDS and other day-to-day survey equipment.
• Perform various field surveys, including but not limited to: boundary, topographic, route, construction, ALTA and control surveys.
• Review and interpret utility maps, blueprints, and site plans to identify buried infrastructure.
• Complete all locate requests in a timely and efficient manner in compliance with regulatory and safety standards.
• Keep clear and concise field notes and maintain detailed records of work completed (daily logs, digital records, sketches).
• Represent the company in the field to clients and the public, ensuring work is performed to company standards and in a professional manner.
• Adhere to safety guidelines and company policies, including PPE use and safe driving practices.
• Report any potential utility conflicts, damages, or abnormal conditions immediately to supervisors.

• Must be reliable. Must be able to travel out of town. Must have a valid driver’s license with a clean driving record. Must be authorized to work in the U.S.
• High school diploma or equivalent required; technical training or certification in utility locating is an asset.
• 3 years of previous experience in utility locating, surveying, or a related field is preferred.
• Familiarity with locating equipment and techniques (e.g., electromagnetic induction, GPR).
• Ability to read and interpret utility maps, construction drawings, and schematics.
• Strong attention to detail and excellent problem-solving skills.
• Comfortable working outdoors in all weather conditions and performing physical tasks.

Job Type: Full-time, Hourly, Non-Exempt

Pay Range: $20.62 - $24.00/hr, depends on experience
