The purpose of this position is to perform semi‑skilled and skilled work including the installation, maintenance, and repair of the city's wastewater collection systems in a safe, effective, and efficient manner to protect public health and safety. Duties may also involve utilities maintenance and general maintenance of City infrastructure, depending on the assigned department.
Responsibilities- Perform installation, construction, maintenance, and repair of various parts, equipment, and machinery in water distribution and wastewater collection systems.
- Carry out manual and laboring activities and general maintenance tasks as assigned.
- Operate or assist with the operation of various power tools, light and/or heavy equipment, and motorized vehicles.
- Perform routine grounds maintenance activities such as mowing, edging lawns, planting, and trimming hedges.
- Layout, plant, trim, weed, fertilize, and apply mulch to flower and landscape beds.
- Secure various City facilities as needed.
- Set up chairs, tables, and other equipment for activities as required.
- Assist street maintenance crews with removing and compacting earth, clearing debris, picking up litter, and carrying tools and equipment.
- Assist with installation, maintenance, removal, and repair of manholes, pumps, lift stations, and related infrastructure.
- Assist with locating and repairing wastewater main line leaks and service line leaks.
- Assist in general work orders.
- Load and unload materials on trucks; transport employees, materials, tools, and equipment to and from appropriate locations.
- Ensure availability of needed materials and supplies.
- Visually check equipment and report maintenance or repair problems at the beginning and end of the workday, ensuring equipment is properly equipped, serviced, and cleaned.
- Dig trenches and install pipes as applicable.
- Respond to public complaints and correct any discrepancies.
- Identify safety issues, correct discrepancies, and report all activities to the immediate supervisor.
- Perform any other duties, responsibilities, or activities assigned at any time with or without notice.
- High School Graduation or GED equivalent.
- Must possess and maintain a valid state driver's license with an acceptable driving history.
Education and Experience
- Six (6) months of experience preferred in general construction, building and grounds maintenance, mechanical trades, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
- Knowledge of equipment, materials, and tools used in construction, grounds maintenance, utilities, or routine painting work.
- Knowledge of proper safety practices, procedures, and regulations applicable to work performed.
- Knowledge of the equipment, methods, and materials used in ground maintenance.
- Knowledge of proper methods and procedures for cleaning work areas and equipment.
- Skill in the use and care of tools, equipment, and materials.
- Skill in establishing and maintaining good working relationships with other City employees and the public.
- Ability to take oral and/or written instructions.
- Perform medium work involving walking, standing, stooping, jumping, lifting, digging, pushing, and raising objects; exert between 20 and 50 pounds of force regularly and 50 to 100 pounds occasionally.
- Exposure to bright/dim light, dusts and pollen, extreme heat or cold, wet or humid conditions, extreme noise, animals/wildlife, vibration, fumes, and/or noxious odors.
- Monday–Friday 7:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. (May be required to work nights, weekends, and holidays to meet business needs.)
