Summer Camp Counselor - Deerfield Park District

The Deerfield Park District has a mission to provide outstanding parks, services, facilities, and recreation programs that enrich lives, promote healthy living, and provide memorable experiences. We are an award‑winning Park District with over 500 staff seasonally and a commitment to creating safe, engaging environments for children.

Job Overview

We are looking for qualified counselors for a variety of camp programs, including Early Childhood (preschool‑2nd grade), School Age (3rd‑8th grade), Art, and Sports Camps, running from June 15 to July 31, 2026 (with optional pre‑ and post‑camp work). Counselors will work part‑time and attend mandatory paid training the week of June 8.

Responsibilities
  • Develop and implement weekly schedules for camp groups.
  • Supervise campers, ensuring adherence to program rules, safety, and regulations.
  • Collaborate with counselors to plan and deliver engaging group activities.
  • Lead age‑appropriate activities such as crafts, games, nature exploration, and swimming, including managing transitions like bus rides and walks.
  • Address and manage camper behavior issues effectively.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and litter‑free camp environment.
  • Communicate with parents about camper experiences and report concerns to leadership.
  • Actively participate in camp activities as a positive role model.
  • For Art Camp counselors: preferred experience in ceramics, drawing, painting, and design.
Qualifications
  • Must be at least 16 years old (applicants 15 by June 8, 2026 may apply to preschool camps after obtaining a work permit).
  • Ability to create a positive and supportive environment for children.
  • Ability to connect effectively with preschool and elementary‑aged children.
  • Enthusiasm and genuine commitment to working with children ranging from age 3 to 8th grade.
  • Professional conduct and serve as a role model to the children.
  • Ability to lift up to 25 lb. and stand for long periods.
  • Must pass a background check.
Schedule
  • 7:30 – 9:30 a.m. and/or 2:15 – 6:00 p.m. (Extended Camps)
  • 8:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. (Hours and days vary by camp)
  • Staff are expected to commit to working the entire summer season.
Pay and Benefits
  • Pay rate: starting at $16.50 per hour, with potential increases up to $21 per hour based on experience and longevity with the Park District.
  • Free membership to Sachs Recreation Center and free pool pass for employees during employment.
