Location: DeKalb, IL 60115 (1 Kish Hospital Dr.)
Schedule: Full-time | Day Shift, 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM | Occasional travel within hospital entities
Pay: Competitive hourly rate, commensurate with experience and certification.
Summary: Join the Kish Health System as a Medical Interpreter, where you’ll play a key role in ensuring clear, compassionate, and culturally sensitive communication between patients with limited English proficiency (LEP), their families, and healthcare providers. You’ll help deliver exceptional patient care by facilitating accurate interpretation, documenting encounters, and supporting a positive patient experience in a collaborative hospital environment.
Requirements- High school diploma or equivalent; some college or bachelor’s degree preferred
- Minimum 2 years of experience as a Medical Interpreter (preferred)
- Certification in Medical Terminology Interpreting Training (e.g., Bridging the Gap)
- Certified Healthcare Interpreter (CHI) or Certification Commission for Healthcare Interpreters credential highly desirable
- Oral proficiency in both English and Spanish, including reading and writing
- Demonstrated ability to interpret accurately and maintain confidentiality
- Working knowledge of medical terminology, EPIC, and basic computer systems
- Valid OPI or Interpreter Readiness Assessment demonstrating competency
- Strong cultural competency and commitment to compliance standards
- Flexibility to travel between departments and sites as needed
- Facilitate communication between LEP patients, families, visitors, and healthcare teams across the Kish Health System
- Respond promptly to interpretation requests and assess priority of needs
- Conduct patient rounding to identify interpretation requirements
- Accurately document all interactions and interventions in the patient’s record
- Serve as a liaison addressing cultural and service-related concerns
- Provide written translation for documents such as discharge instructions and patient materials
- Participate in departmental projects, including translation, editing, and proofreading
- Maintain compliance with hospital policies, standards, and regulatory guidelines
- Perform additional duties as assigned to support hospital operations
