Position: 2526-016 Cashier/Development Services

JOB SUMMARY

Under the general supervision of the Department Supervisor as may be assigned, responsible for performing cashiering and clerical work, requiring a specialized knowledge of departmental/division operations, engages in public contact both in person and by telephone; handles detailed and complex records; aids co-workers in detailed situations; will handle payment transactions.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Receives written and oral customer requests, complaints and inquiries.
  • Processes building permit applications, distributes plans review letters, and permits.
  • Reviews and inputs building permit applications, plans, and supporting documents for completeness, sufficiency of information, conformance with legal standards, and compliance with city requirements.
  • Answers questions and provides information to the public and applicants regarding building department requirements, regulations, and procedures.
  • Inputs building/property information into City's computer system.
  • Provides coordination and routes customers to appropriate government agencies for other types of services requested.
  • Types and proofreads a wide variety of reports, letters, memorandums, and correspondence.
  • Assists with money deposits and with the collection of permit and inspection fees and fines.
  • Is generally familiar with and has knowledge of City permits and fees.
  • Performs general administrative duties in support of all Development Services Division.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
  • Schedules and manages the daily calendars of the Chief Building Official and Inspectors.
OTHER ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES
  • Attendance and punctuality are essential functions of this position. Non-rotating 40-hour work week, Monday - Friday, 8:00 am – 5:00 pm. Must be available to work additional hours as needed.
  • Employees are required to work as a teammate and frequently meet with co-workers and supervisors; employee is required to communicate in-person with the public during business hours.
  • Position involves performing multiple tasks, meeting deadlines, and occasionally working extended hours.
  • Employee may need to attend and participate group meetings and stay current with new code changes, construction trends, and innovations in the field of building inspection.
  • During emergency response situations for our community, the position may be tasked with additional duties.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Education and Experience:
    • High School diploma or GED certificate, required.
    • Three (3) years’ experience of related clerical, required.
    • Three (3) years’ cashier experience, with handling payments/money, required.
    • Two years of education or training in related computer use in similar work, required.
  • Other Conditions of Employment:
    • Must have valid Texas Drivers' License, Class C required.
    • Must have excellent customer skills.
KNOWLEDGE,

SKILLS AND ABILITIES
  • Skilled in the use of personal computer and general office equipment.
  • Skilled in Microsoft programs.
  • Knowledge of computer software and operations.
  • Ability to interpret oral and written instructions and refers deviations, problems or unfamiliar situations to supervisor for proper decisions and guidance.
  • Ability to write reports, memos, schedules and general correspondence.
  • Skilled in oral and written communication.
  • Knowledge of recordkeeping.
  • Ability to be courteous when receiving in-bound telephone calls and forwarding calls as necessary, Ability; demonstrates courteous and effective working relations with the public.
  • Ability to manage workloads and meet deadlines to maintain efficiency in the department.
  • Knowledgeable in safety regulations, work practices and procedures.
  • Ability to work independently in the absence of specific instructions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain proper working relationships with supervisors, coworkers, and other departments.
  • Ability to speak and understand Spanish preferred, but not required.
