POSITION SUMMARY:
The Substitute will be responsible for classroom, meal service, dietary, and family educational activities to ensure a quality center-based program for families. Duties vary according to the length of the assignment.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Education Substitute Duties:
- Be available to fill in for Early Head Start Teacher, Head Start Teacher Assistant, Extended Day Teacher Assistant, or Center Aide whenever needed.
- Follow suggestions and recommendations of managers, leaders, and specialists to establish a comprehensive child/family program.
- Understand the needs of children in the classroom, including health issues, and make accommodations to support child outcomes.
- Assist in providing developmentally appropriate activities to promote physical, social, emotional, and intellectual development.
- Introduce age-appropriate materials, guide children’s physical growth, and help develop basic concepts as per education, nutrition, health, dental, and mental health plans.
- Support classroom activities such as reading stories, preparing activities, conducting group activities, and alerting teachers to issues.
- Maintain a safe, clean, and orderly classroom and playground environment, report damages, and ensure sanitation.
- Encourage language development, cultural acceptance, positive self-concept, and social skills. Promote appropriate behavior and problem-solving experiences.
- Supervise children at all times, maintain child/staff ratios, and report abuse or neglect per policies.
- Collaborate with staff and participate in activities and meetings.
- Act as a role model and advocate for Head Start children.
- Attend training, staff meetings, and maintain confidentiality.
- Participate in safety drills, and submit reports as required.
- Follow policies and regulations of Head Start, federal, state, and local laws.
Center Aide Substitute Duties:
- Handle meal pickups, ensure food safety, deliver meals, and clean containers.
- Store snacks properly and maintain supplies.
- Drive vehicle for meal and supply transportation, perform safety checks, and keep documentation.
- Coordinate with staff during meal pickup and delivery, and communicate any issues.
NON-ESSENTIAL/SECONDARY FUNCTIONS:
Perform additional duties as assigned. This description provides an overview and is not exhaustive.
JOB STANDARDS:
Education: High School Diploma or equivalent, complete mandated trainings, obtain CPR/First Aid certification within 90 days, and meet minimum work hours to remain active.
Experience: No experience required.
Licenses & Certifications: Valid Florida driver’s license, insurable, and background checks as required.
Physical Requirements: Ability to perform physical tasks including lifting up to 65 lbs., standing, sitting, and driving.
Equipment: Computer, office equipment, vehicle.
Skills & Expertise: Knowledge of health and sanitation practices, effective communication, record-keeping, classroom management, and working with children including those with special needs.
Environmental Factors: Work primarily at Head Start facilities, occasional travel, and outdoor work when necessary.
