Overview
The County of Volusia is seeking an experienced Equipment Operator III for the Solid Waste Division. This position is located at the Tomoka Landfill in Port Orange, Florida and will be responsible for operating heavy equipment for daily operations. Candidates must be proficient in operating landfill heavy equipment including a bulldozer, excavator, front‑end loader, landfill compactor, semi‑truck, and waste separation equipment.
Responsibilities- Operate crane or equivalent.
- Place and remove pipe.
- Operate tractor equipped with front end loader and backhoe with a bucket of a yard or more.
- Operate truck‑mounted pavement striping machine.
- Operate a power grader on construction and maintenance work.
- Operate a heavy‑duty gasoline or diesel road roller to compact material.
- Operate a heavy bulldozer and maintain a sanitary landfill.
- Direct truck drivers to dumping locations.
- Operate a bulldozer in fill area.
- Operate a lowboy.
- Transport equipment to and from construction sites.
- Occasionally operate a simple flatbed or dump truck, or a variety of minor powered machinery and equipment.
- Participate generally in crew labor as workload demands.
- Operate a front end loader.
- Load fill, rock, slag, and other construction materials.
- Operate a landfill compactor.
- Operate a semi‑trailer with walking floor on regional roadways and in the landfill environment.
- Operate a large front‑end loader in an enclosed building with truck traffic using tipping floor attachments.
- Perform daily safety inspections of assigned equipment prior to and after use.
- Perform routine service and maintenance.
- May be assigned to other county locations based upon operational needs.
- Attend work on a regular and consistent basis.
- Adhere to Federal, State, County and Local ordinances.
- Respond to emergency situations.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Schedule:
four 10‑hour days, which may include Saturdays and holidays. - Overtime may be required and schedules may change based on operational needs.
- Position is posted continuously and may close without notice.
- Completion of the eight (8) grade level and three (3) years of experience in the operation and maintenance of heavy construction equipment.
- Possession of a valid Florida CDL of a class determined by the division/department of assignment within six (6) months of hire and maintained thereafter.
- A comparable amount of education, training, or experience may be substituted for the minimum requirements.
- Must possess and maintain a valid Florida driver license.
- Florida CDL Class
A. - At least one (1) year of experience operating landfill equipment, including bulldozer, excavator, front end loader, landfill compactor, semi‑truck, and waste separation equipment.
- Familiarity with solid waste operational practices or principles.
- A pre‑employment skills test will be required.
- Thorough, demonstrated knowledge of the operation and safety precautions of the particular equipment to which assignment is made.
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Skilled in the operation of complex construction equipment.
- Ability to establish effective working relationships.
- Ability to work under stressful conditions.
- Must be able to relocate to other county locations based upon operational needs.
Physical Demands: Ability to lift, push (arm and leg), pull 50 pounds, reach, climb, and perform other tasks necessary to operate a motorized vehicle; sit, turn neck and body, and handle equipment in the workspace.
Environmental Demands: Outside work. Exposure to inclement weather, fumes, odors, noise, vibration, dust, and poor ventilation.
Mental Demands: Ability to read and comprehend operational and safety instructions, procedures, rules, policies, warnings, memos; ability to write simple sentences relaying information, data, and details; ability to perform basic math.
