Summary StatementA Certified Orientation & Mobility Specialist (COMS) is a highly trained expert who specializes in teaching individuals who are blind, low vision or who have functional visual limitations, to navigate throughout their schools, work, and communities.
COMS perform comprehensive assessments and provide 1:1 instruction. COMS are a critical member of Individualized Education Planning teams, they develop goals, submit grades, and introduce GPS technology as needed.
Selective RequirementSelective Requirements must be met in addition to the job requirements. Applicants who do not possess the selective requirement will not be qualified.
- Must be certified as an Orientation and Mobility Specialist by the Academy of Certification of Vision Rehabilitation and Education Professionals (ACVREP)
- Plans and implements educational lessons to address independent travel, orientation, and safe movement in the home, school, or community setting by accommodating for the specific eye condition.
- Keeps accurate records and data to reflect student progress and provides mandated reports to schools and families.
- Attends mandated meetings concerning the educational needs of the students and advocates for students’ needs.
- Acquires and delivers adaptive equipment, and administers appropriate assessments to students and writes reports with recommendations.
- Collaborates with school staff, other agencies and families to provide integrated services that meet the child’s visual needs. Collaborates with families, schools and vocational rehabilitation staff to prepare students for transition out of school and into post-secondary education or employment.
- Makes referrals for additional services that may be needed by the student to address visual needs and to transition into adult life.

- Certified Orientation & Mobility Specialist

- Six months work experience, internship, and/or coursework as Orientation and Mobility Specialist for individuals with vision loss.

Criminal background check: A satisfactory criminal background check is required as a condition of hire. The recruiting agency may require the applicant to pay for the criminal background check as part of the conditional offer of hire.
All new hires are required to report to the Statewide New Employee Orientation (SNEO) on their first day of employment. Sessions are held at designated locations in Kent or New Castle County.
Applicants must provide proof of negative Tuberculosis test within the last 12 months before start date.
