Building Materials / Lumberyard Experience Required Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced Outside Sales Representative (OSR) with a proven background in the lumber and building materials industry
. The ideal candidate has established relationships in the market (Carter/Holmes Lumber, S&L Lumber, 84 Lumber, Contract Lumber, Graves Lumber, etc.) and a strong understanding of lumber, trusses, stairs, windows, doors, and interior/exterior trim products.

This role focuses on growing a book of business, managing complex customer needs, and driving high-value sales within residential, multi-family, and commercial construction markets.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with builders, contractors, and key decision-makers.
  • Identify customer needs and recommend the best mix of products and services to meet project requirements.
  • Act as liaison between customers and internal teams to gather specifications, prepare accurate proposals, and support complex project builds.
  • Create and negotiate sales contracts, ensuring accuracy from customer specs, engineers, or architects.
  • Conduct professional, effective sales presentations and product demonstrations.
  • Research and pursue new business opportunities; expand market reach through strategic prospecting.
  • Troubleshoot customer or field issues, including complex product or installation concerns.
  • Provide mentoring or informal guidance to newer sales reps as needed.
  • Prepare required sales reports, documentation, and forecasting.
  • Stay current on product knowledge, building material trends, and sales techniques.
  • Maintain a safe work environment and follow all safety procedures.
  • Perform additional related duties as assigned.
Requirements
  • Must have OSR experience specifically within a lumberyard or building materials environment.
  • Existing book of business strongly preferred; candidates with a strong customer portfolio may be offered a 6-month or 12-month compensation guarantee prior to moving to full commission.
  • Proven success selling lumber and building materials such as trusses, stairs, doors, windows, and millwork.
  • Bachelor's degree in Sales, Marketing, or related field OR equivalent industry experience.
  • Strong communication, presentation, and relationship-building skills.
  • Ability to manage complex projects, specifications, and customer requirements.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to work independently.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Valid driver's license; travel to customer sites required.
  • Ability to lift up to 25 lbs frequently and up to 80 lbs occasionally.
  • Comfortable working in both office and field environments, including exposure to outdoor conditions.
Compensation Structure
  • Competitive commission-based compensation plan.
  • Commission is based on gross margin dollars and is more generous than typical industry plans
