Job Description & How to Apply Below
Emergent is a Delft-based company dedicated to revolutionizing autonomous aerial systems for defense and emergency response. Our advanced technology leverages decentralized swarming algorithms to tackle real-world challenges in large scale intelligence gathering. We have successfully attracted significant capital, and are conversing with many client and strategic partners in Europe and allied countries, signaling strong market traction. Backed by experienced advisors, we offer an exciting opportunity to be part of a team that is pushing the boundaries of UAV collaborative autonomy.

What you will do:

As a UAV Robotics Engineer, with a focus on tracking, sensor fusion, and decentralized autonomy algorithms, you will play a pivotal role in advancing our capabilities for autonomous and collaborative UAV systems. You will work on algorithms that allow distributed UAV teams to interpret uncertain sensor data, maintain a shared operational picture, and make robust decisions in complex real-world environments.

You will be part of a team of ten people and will have significant autonomy and influence in the decisions we make. Your self-starting capabilities will be crucial, as you will have the freedom to lead initiatives, shape technical direction, and turn research-grade algorithms into reliable software modules.

Your responsibilities will involve:

Developing tracking and sensor fusion algorithms for UAV-based intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance, and manned-unmanned teaming applications.

Working on state estimation, multi-target tracking, data association, and uncertainty-aware fusion of detections, tracks, and tracklets from different sensor sources.

Designing and implementing decentralized estimation and fusion methods suitable for distributed UAV teams with limited or intermittent communication.

Applying and extending algorithms such as Kalman filters, Extended/Unscented Kalman Filters, covariance handling, track-to-track fusion, and Covariance Intersection.

Developing intelligent collaborative autonomy algorithms that use fused sensor information to support UAV swarm behavior and mission execution.

Developing software from prototype to a productized module in our Core OS.

Developing advanced simulation environments for testing tracking, fusion, autonomy, and UAV swarm behavior.

Testing, V&V, and deployment of your algorithms on real-world UAV systems and UAV swarms.

What you bring:

BSc or MSc degree in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Robotics, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Applied Mathematics, or similar.

1+ years of experience in a relevant technical field.

Experience with tracking and/or sensor fusion algorithms, such as Kalman filtering, EKF, UKF, particle filters, covariance estimation, or track-to-track fusion.

Affinity with uncertainty modeling, probabilistic reasoning, state estimation, and working with noisy real-world sensor data.

Strong analytical skills and the ability to translate mathematical concepts into practical, robust software.

Proficiency in Linux/WSL, C++, and Python.

Experience with robotics, autonomy, simulation, or real-time systems.

Excellent problem-solving skills and a proactive approach to addressing technical challenges.

Effective communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively in a dynamic team environment.

Excellent verbal communication in English and/or Dutch.

EU and/or NATO citizenship required.

Nice to haves:

Experience with decentralized filters, distributed estimation, Covariance Intersection, information filters, or consensus-based fusion.

Experience with multi-target tracking, data association, JPDA, MHT, PMBM, PHD filters, IMM filters, or similar methods.

Experience with radar, EO/IR, RF, acoustic, GNSS-denied navigation, or other defense-relevant sensor systems.

Experience with ROS2, Docker, or robotic systems integration.

Familiarity with drone hardware and real-world robotic system deployment.

Application materials (combine PDFs and submit in CV entry):

Motivation letter that at least contains a description of something you have built/designed/programmed during school/uni/work or in your personal time.
